Natural gas: The fracking fallacy - The US is banking on decades of abundant natural gas to power its economic resurgence. That may be wishful thinking.

All of those investments are based on the expectation that US gas production will climb for decades, in line with the official forecasts by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). As agency director Adam Sieminski put it last year: “For natural gas, the EIA has no doubt at all that production can continue to grow all the way out to 2040.”

But a careful examination of the assumptions behind such bullish forecasts suggests that they may be overly optimistic, in part because the government's predictions rely on coarse-grained studies of major shale formations, or plays. Now, researchers are analysing those formations in much greater detail and are issuing more-conservative forecasts. They calculate that such formations have relatively small 'sweet spots' where it will be profitable to extract gas.

The results are “bad news”, says Tad Patzek, head of the University of Texas at Austin's department of petroleum and geosystems engineering, and a member of the team that is conducting the in-depth analyses. With companies trying to extract shale gas as fast as possible and export significant quantities, he argues, “we're setting ourselves up for a major fiasco”.

The convoy is "a highly visible demonstration of U.S, commitment to its NATO allies and demonstrating NATO's ability to move military forces freely across allied borders in close cooperation," U.S. Army Europe spokesman Lt. Col. Craig Childs, said in a statement, according to the Stripes report. The troops and vehicles involved will be moving from training exercises conducted as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve in Estonia, Lithuania and Poland, the report said. They'll move through Latvia and the Czech Republic as they make their way to Vilseck, Germany, about a 40 miles drive from the Czech border.

The American Story Is A Mystery Only to Economists

Here’s what Bloomberg’s Craig Torres and Michelle Jamrisko write: “American Mystery Story: Consumers Aren’t Spending Even In a Booming Job Market”. Yes, it is a great mystery to 95% of journalists and economists. Because they have never learned to even contemplate that perhaps people can be so deep in debt that they have nothing left to spend. Instead, their knowledge base states that if people don’t spend, they must be saving. Those are the sole two options. And so if the US government reports that 863,000 underpaid new waiters have been hired, these waiters have to go out and spend all that underpayment, they must consume. And if they don’t, that becomes The American Mystery Story.

For me, the mystery lies elsewhere. I’m wondering how it ever got to this. How did the capacity for critical thinking disappear from the field of economics? And from journalism?

Chicago’s Untold Story of Widespread Child Abuse in State Facilities

Derrick Broze
Activist Post

Illinois seems to be a hotbed for a lack of accountability and transparency on the part of government agencies. Most recently we have learned that police in Chicago were using a domestic “black site” in the Homan Square area to illegally detain, question, and torture Americans suspected of crimes.

However, before that story broke, Illinois was already in the midst of another controversy. One that has received very little attention outside of local and state media.

State treatment and residential centers for youth in Illinois are rampant with abuse – physical, mental, and sexual...

The oil glut and low prices reflect an affordability problem

For a long time, there has been a belief that the decline in oil supply will come by way of high oil prices. Demand will exceed supply. It seems to me that this view is backward–the decline in supply will come through low oil prices.

The oil glut we are experiencing now reflects a worldwide affordability crisis. Because of a lack of affordability, demand is depressed. This lack of demand keeps prices low–below the cost of production for many producers. If the affordability issue cannot be fixed, it threatens to bring down the system by discouraging investment in oil production.

CIA DIRECTOR DESCRIBES HOW THE U.S. OUTSOURCES TERROR INTERROGATIONS

In rare remarks about a sensitive issue, the director of the CIA confirmed today that the U.S. government works with foreign intelligence agencies to capture and jointly interrogate suspected terrorists.

“There are places throughout the world where CIA has worked with other intelligence services and has been able to bring people into custody and engage in the debriefings of these individuals…through our liaison partners, and sometimes there are joint debriefings that take place as well,” said John Brennan, the CIA director, speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Brennan’s remarks confirm what journalists have long reported: that the Obama administration sometimes helps other countries do the dirty work of snatching and interrogating terror suspects–keeping the U.S. at arm’s length from operations that are ethically and legally dubious.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"....ethically and legally dubious.." ?!?!?!?

HOW ABOUT FLIPPING MORALLY ABHORRENT?!?

And folks, whenever the US tortures, or outsources torture, the following things happen:

1. The world understands that all of those values this country allegedly hold dear (human rights, the right to due process, and even the right to life) mean absoflippinglutely NOTHING to those in power.

2. When the US tortures, or outsources torture, it gives other governments which don't like us much carte blanche to torture American civilians and military personnel.

Those of you with friends or family serving, please chew on that last one for a while.

Impending Threat to Canadian Democracy: Harper Government’s “Anti-Terrorism Act” isn’t about Terrorism, it’s a Torture Act

We know already that Stephen Harper doesn’t flinch from covering up high-level Canadian responsibility for torture in Afghanistan. In November 2009, the Toronto Star quoted a former senior NATO public affairs official as saying that flagrantly false denials about Canadian complicity in the torture of Afghan detainees had been scripted by Harper and his PMO, “which was running the public affairs aspect of Canadian engagement in Afghanistan with a 6,000-mile screwdriver.”9 And we’ve not forgotten that a month later Mr. Harper prorogued Parliament in order to shut down a parliamentary committee that was hearing evidence on the subject.

But on October 22 of last year, when a deranged gunman murdered Corporal Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial and then tried to run amok on Parliament Hill, Mr. Harper was less brave. While some members of his caucus prepared to defend themselves and their parliamentary colleagues with anything that came to hand, he hid in a closet.

On Iran deal, Republicans cut off their nose to spite their face

The letter signaled not only continued Republican obstructionism toward seemingly anything President Obama does, but also that the United States is potentially no longer a cohesive entity in terms of how it conducts itself in global affairs. In fact, what the Republicans have done with their attempt at scuttling the diplomatic efforts aimed at peacefully resolving the Iranian nuclear dispute, is to make a claim that has very rarely been made in US history: that the US government’s executive branch does not conduct the nation’s foreign policy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Under the Constitution, only the White House and the State Department may conduct foreign policy, and those 47 Senators who signed that letter to Iran (and the congressmen who bypassed the White House to invite Netanyahu to speak before Congress) are all in violation of the Logan Act, which carries a three-year prison sentence for the crime of unauthorized negotiations with foreign governments.

In other words, if you were to take four people at random, the Ferguson police would consider three of them fugitives.

The U.S. has so much crude that it is running out of places to put it, and that could drive oil and gasoline prices even lower in the coming months.

For the past seven weeks, the United States has been producing and importing an average of 1 million more barrels of oil every day than it is consuming. That extra crude is flowing into storage tanks, especially at the country’s main trading hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, pushing U.S. supplies to their highest point in at least 80 years, the Energy Department reported last month.

BP signs $12 billion energy deal in Egypt

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt: British oil company BP finalized on Saturday a $12 billion deal with Egypt to develop 5 trillion cubic feet of gas resources and 55 million barrels of condensates in the West Nile Delta.

Rising energy consumption and decreasing production have turned it from a net energy exporter to a net importer in the last few years and caused persistent blackouts.

Caligula’s Horse By Eric Margolis

snip: Adelson, who has reportedly called for nuking Iran, is also Bibi Netanyahu’s primary political and financial sponsor. So Adelson can say he owns the US Congress and Israel. Some Israelis, who will vote next week in a very tight election, are uneasy that Netanyahu is “owned” by the American gambling mogul Adelson. Is this the Zionist dream of a state built on morality, social fairness, and honesty?

Democrats are now largely owned by Israeli-American billionaire Haim Saban who calls himself somewhere to the right of the late Ariel Sharon. Saban, a media mogul, recently gave $5-10 million to the Clinton Library and is Hillary’s principal backer.

Bibi’s visit to Congress was clearly intended as pre-election political grandstanding. Marketing fear of Islam, Iran, ISIS, Hezbollah, Syria, al-Shebab and Boko Haram are now the stock in trade for embattled politicians in Israel, Canada, Australia and France.

John Kerry Says GOP Letter to Iran Was ‘Wrong’

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt—Secretary of State John Kerry, a day ahead of new nuclear negotiations with Iran, stressed to Tehran’s leadership that President Barack Obama has the power to implement any agreement reached with the country, despite intense opposition from Republican lawmakers in Congress.

New poll: Netanyahu's Likud down to 20 seats

The two final polls published before Israel's election predict that Zionist Union will have a four-seat margin over the prime minister's Likud.

A Channel 10 poll published on Friday, just three days before next week's Knesset election, has given only 20 seats to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party - the lowest the party has polled since the leadup to the vote.

n another poll published Friday evening by Channel 2, Likud got 22 seats, while Zionist Union got 26.

This four-seat gap between the two main parties reflects the results of most of the polls conducted over the past week.

Still the right-wing bloc was ahead of the center-left. In Channel 10's poll, the Arab Joint List got 13 seats, while Yesh Atid and Habayit Hayehudi both polled at 12 seats and Kulanu polled at 10. Shas stayed on seven seats, United Torah Judaism polled at six seats, and Yisrael Beiteinu, Yahad and Meretz all got five seats.

Will the 47 Diplomacy Saboteurs Have Democratic Enablers?

Republicans ostentatiously trying to blow up negotiations with Iran with their "open letter" to Iranian leaders - essentially begging Iranian hardliners to blow up the talks on the Republicans' behalf. Senate historians could find no precedent for the party opposed to the president in Congress trying to blow up an international negotiation involving the United States in this way.

But in terms of practical outcomes, the main drama still lies ahead. The main drama in terms of practical consequences is still all about Senate Democrats, not about Senate Republicans. Without at least six Senate Democrats supporting them, Republicans cannot pass anti-diplomacy legislation in the Senate. Without at least 13 Senate Democrats supporting them, Republicans cannot override a presidential veto of anti-diplomacy legislation. Without the support of a substantial group of Senate Democrats, Republicans cannot blow up the talks. The key question in the wake of the unprecedented controversy around the Netanyahu anti-diplomacy speech to Congress and the Republicans' open letter to Iran is: Which Senate Democrats will reward the Republicans who did these things by helping them try to blow up diplomacy?

Is It Time to Disband the Republican Party?

Unfortunately, the days of Eisenhowers, Roosevelts and Lincolns in the Republican Party are long gone, and so too are that party's progressive beginnings.

What started out as a good idea in Ripon, Wisconsin and Jackson, Michigan has turned into a nightmare for the US and for "We The People."

Today's Republican Party, the modern-day Republican Party, hasn't done a single positive thing for "We The People" in nearly 100 years.

Instead, that party consistently does things that hurt our economy, hurt our society and hurt our country.

Today's Republican Party has sold out to the wealthy elite, and only cares about helping the rich get richer.

They take millions of dollars in donations from lobbyists and mega-donors, all the while corrupting our democracy and electoral process.

Republicans today are in bed with the likes of Big Oil, ensuring that Big Oil can get even bigger, while our planet slowly gets destroyed.

Republicans today support policies that have destroyed a once flourishing working-class.

US says UN will approve final nuclear deal between Iran, P5+1

US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki has said that the United Nations Security Council would endorse any final nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group.

Iran and the P5+1 group -- the US, Britain, France, China, Russia, and Germany -- are currently working to complete the outlines of a nuclear deal by the end of March after they reached an interim agreement in November 2013.

SHTFplan.com

The California drought has already been alarming enough not only for residents of the state – whose water supply was never secured, and has constantly been the source of heated controversy – but those across the country and globe who depend up on its agriculture for survival.

As SHTF reported back in November, NASA scientists have already warned that California’s groundwater supplies are at critical low points, and threatening the food supply.

Now, Jay Famiglietti – the same NASA hydrologist who led the previous report – is sounding an all-out alarm that California has less than one year of water remaining based on satellite image data:

Clinton emails breathe new life into Benghazi panel

The photo that became an Internet meme - Hillary Rodham Clinton, wearing sunglasses, staring at her BlackBerry - troubles Republicans on the House committee investigating the deadly attacks in Benghazi, Libya, for what they say is an incomprehensible omission.

Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., wants to know why the panel has no emails from Oct. 18, 2011, the day the photo was taken as Clinton, then the secretary of state, was en route to Tripoli. In fact, the committee says it has no emails at all from Clinton's trip to Libya, which occurred just days before longtime Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi was killed.

There’s Only One Way to Stop a Murderous Government

I’m sure by now, most of you have heard of the infamous Milgram experiment that was conducted in the early 60’s. I’ll save you the details since, if you’re like me, you’ve probably read about it a dozen times or more already. It’s one of most popular experiments to cite, because it says so much about the nature of evil, and the darkest potential of the human spirit; and anyone who understands the dangers posed by government power, could probably describe the experiment from memory.

In short, Milgram provided an answer to the most tragic question in human history. How do so many good people wind up doing horrific things to their fellow-man? How is it that when the Nazis had to answer for their crimes, all they could say for themselves was “I was just following orders.”

7 Ways the Matrix Coerces Public Consent for Torture

Cleverly at work for the dark side, the corporate media isn’t going into great detail about the recent discovery that the Chicago Police Department has for years been operating a secret, off-site, extra-judicial, unconstitutional detention and interrogation center in a nondescript warehouse on the West side of the Windy City. Americans, so the talking heads would have us believe, have more important things to busy ourselves with.

The protest against this outrage is growing, however because at Homan Square, as it’s known, the local police ‘disappear’ American citizens before charging them with any crime. They hide them there for hours or days without the knowledge of lawyers, family, or friends, interrogating, threatening, abusing and at times coming up with cleverly inhumane ways to torture them.

Hillary Clinton's Questionable Process for Sorting Work Emails

Hillary Clinton asked the public to trust her during a recent press conference at the United Nations, when she stated that she has already complied with transparency laws by turning over all public records she generated as Secretary of State.

She had no business making that claim. A Time magazine report about the process used to identify public records in her possession shows that she cannot possibly know if she is in compliance with the law. And juxtaposing her process with the words used in her press conference shows her core claim to be misleading.

Unless she can disprove the story, her credibility can only suffer from the comparison.

Hillary Clinton Didn't Encrypt Her Secretary of State Emails For Months

New details have emerged about exactly how Hillary Clinton secured the homebrew private email servers she used as Secretary of State. The punchline? Clinton didn't encrypt her emails or use a certificate for her first three months running the State Department.

While the future presidential candidate was dodging reporters' questions and complaining about the inconvenience of carrying two phones, security experts at Venafi, a company that sells email security software, went back to January 2009 when Clinton took office and analyzed the server activity through the end of her cabinet term.

The findings are unsettling at best:

Mar 13 08:55

No One Read Hillary’s Emails Before Deleting Them

For more than a year after she left office in 2013, she did not transfer work-related email from her private account to the State Department. She commissioned a review of the 62,320 messages in her account only after the department–spurred by the congressional investigation–asked her to do so.

And this review did not involve opening and reading each email; instead, Clinton’s lawyers created a list of names and keywords related to her work and searched for those. Slightly more than half the total cache–31,830 emails–did not contain any of the search terms, according to Clinton’s staff, so they were deemed to be “private, personal records.”

Hillary’s Email Mess Gets Messier

“In early March 2015, Secretary Clinton confirmed reports that she used a personal email account, rather than a government account, for government business during her tenure at State. Although AP’s FOIA requests have been pending for years, State first asked Secretary Clinton to turn over emails from that personal account only last summer. Secretary Clinton reportedly provided about 50,000 pages of printed emails to State late last year, and has said she wants those emails to be released to the public. State’s failure to ensure that Secretary Clinton’s governmental emails were retained and preserved by the agency, and its failure timely to seek out and search those emails in response to AP’s requests, indicate at the very least that State has not engaged in the diligent, good-faith search that FOIA requires.”

IDF prepares for possibility of multi-pronged terror attack coming from Sinai

***
"our mission as a division is to ensure a feeling of security and routine in the area. Whether it is in Eilat or Nitzana. The operational challenges are very complicated, because on the one hand you have here a peaceful border, and on the other hand a frontier area in Sinai has developed that enables terrorist groups to grow like Ansar Bayit al-Maqdis which became an ISIS affiliate. This organization, as we have seen recently, creates a number of terror attacks against the Egyptian army, and this is one of the more bothersome challenges which we are preparing for."

Secret Service agents nearly drove over 'suspicious package' in investigation near White House, sources say

The two Secret Service agents who were drinking on the night they drove into a crime scene investigation near the White House almost ran over a “suspicious package,” sources told Fox News on Thursday.

The details of the March 4 incident come as officials seek to downplay what’s been the latest embarrassing episode for the troubled agency.

Police were examining the package around 10 p.m. when the two senior agents – one of whom is a top member of President Obama’s protective detail – arrived at a guard shack checkpoint that had been vacated due to its proximity to the package, which turned out to be a book covered in a shirt.

The letter to Tehran, dated March 9, reads like a childish exclamation, an impetuous feeling that its authors are being left out in the cold of history. “It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our government that you may not fully understand our constitutional system.”

With school teacher dourness, the note goes on to defang and denude any agreement that might arise between the Obama administration and that of Ayatollah Khamenei and his colleagues. “Congress,” it reminds the readers, “plays the significant role of ratifying [international agreements]”.

To summarize: in the last election, the voters of Maui, in a ballot measure, decided to place a temporary ban on further Dow/Monsanto GMO/pesticide experiments in Maui County.

Immediately, Monsanto, Dow, and yes, even the County government of Maui (betraying their own voters), lined up against the results of the vote.

Monsanto and Dow, joined by the Maui County government, sued to nullify the results of the vote, claiming the regulation of GMOs comes under the control of the state of Hawaii and the federal government, and can’t be decided at the county level.

That’s where we are now. The voters’ demands are suspended in limbo. Their legal call for an independent commission to investigate the practices of Monsanto and Dow in Maui County, and decide whether they threaten the people and the land—that urgent call has been silenced for the time being.

GOP Senate Aides: Iran Letter Was ‘Lighthearted’

The unprecedented effort by Senate Republicans to sabotage ongoing US-Iran relations with a letter earlier this week, in which they openly warned Iran of their intentions to dishonor any agreements President Obama made, was a lighthearted jest, according to Republican aides.

“The administration has no sense of humor,” one aide complained, after reports that the letter was likely a felony offense, and could amount to treason.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"I mean, come on; REALLY! We didn't think anyone was going to take us seriously! Honest! It was a joke! We are not traitors! We're not Israel stooges (much). We're not violating the Logan act. But we still think nuking Iran is the way to go!"

The U.S. Has Too Much Oil and Nowhere to Put It

Seven months ago the giant tanks in Cushing, Okla., the largest crude oil storage hub in North America, were three-quarters empty. After spending the last few years brimming with light, sweet crude unlocked by the shale drilling revolution, the tanks held just less than 18 million barrels by late July, down from a high of 52 million in early 2013. New pipelines to refineries along the Gulf Coast had drained Cushing of more than 30 million barrels in less than a year.

US "Urges" Vietnam To Stop Helping Russian Bombers Re-Fuel

It appears Washington is losing some control among its allies. Amid a flurry of high-level visits to Vietnam last year, the US has been pouring in aid and assistance in health, education, landmines clearance, scholarships and nuclear energy. The reason is now becoming clear. As Reuters reports, Vietnam has been allowing Russia to use a former US military base to refuel nuclear-capable bombers as it rattles its sabre over the Asia-Pac region.. and America would like that to stop: "we have urged Vietnamese officials to ensure that Russia is not able to use its access to Cam Ranh Bay to conduct activities that could raise tensions in the region." All that was missing was the "or else."

GENERAL MILLS SUED FOR DUMPING 15,000 GALLONS OF CANCER CHEMICALS INTO AIR AND WATER

Unlike Pepsi Co, which recently got let loose from a class action lawsuit concerning a carcinogen used in soda, a class action lawsuit against the maker of Cheerios, Yoplait yogurt, and Pillsbury cinnamon rolls was just certified by a federal judge.
Minneapolis residents claim that General Mills polluted their air and water with more than 15,000 gallons of carcinogenic solvents that have seeped into homes.

General Mills (GM) makes hundreds of foods that most Americans are used to eating on a daily basis, but the company obviously has little concern for the health of the mouths they make millions from.

Plaintiffs in the class action suit claim that GM released trichloroethylene – a chemical used to extract vegetable oils from plant materials – into the area around its former facility in Minneapolis. The company disposed approximately 15,000 gallons of chemical solvents into the air and water supply.

Dr. Lorne Everett, an expert for the citizens of Minneapolis states that:

Webmaster's Commentary:

I hope that the plaintiffs are successful in this case, and that GM gets its hat handed to it, financially.

I also hope this comes out of the hides of every GM executive who blithely signed off on this, to the point that somebody, or several people go to jail, and that it is not a financial penalty only.

Because it is only when culpable executives are imprisoned (and not in a "Club Fed") for their crimes that behaviour like this will stop.

IT Expert Says He Traced Hillary’s Email Server To Manhattan Government Building

Cyber-security expert Vinny Troia told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday that he traced the IP address of the server Hillary Clinton used to host the private email account she used as secretary of state to a government building in the heart of New York City.

“I did read reports that [the server] was at her house, but when we traced the IP address it came back to the city office here in downtown Manhattan,” Troia told Van Susteren.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Hillary had her email served on a government computer, than everything on it is the property of the taxpayers! If those 31,000 erased emails were private, then she was using government property for personal use. If those erased emails were official business, Hillary is guilty of destroying public property!
