ociated Press issued a story yesterday (Monday) entitled “Iran moves closer to nuke warhead capacity.” It was full of inaccurate and misleading information implying that Iran had admitted trying to enrich weapons-grade nuclear material. The story appeared on a wide variety of media.

Last night, Antiwar.com news editor Jason Ditz issued a story refuting the AP story.

This morning, Associated Press recalled the story without explanation and replaced it with another, much less inflamatory story written by a different author.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told a Senate hearing: "About a hundred Basij dressed as civilians tried to assault the embassy shouting 'Death to Italy' and 'Death to (Prime Minister) Berlusconi'."

He later told reporters the attackers were "certainly or most probably Basij."

"We did not recognize them, but because of the type of demonstration and the slogans chanted it looked a bit suspect."

Dr Pachauri has been fighting to salvage his reputation since it was revealed that his recent climate change report included false claims that the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035.

Iran's nuclear envoy says he's formally notified the International Atomic Energy Agency of the decision to enrich at least some of it uranium stockpile to 20 percent. According to one expert, that would be a significant step toward weapon-grade uranium.

In 2001 the IPCC published its Third Assessment report prominently featuring a graph that became "the logo of global warming". Previous historical reconstructions didn't show our modern warm climate as particularly anomalous. This was very different, and was hailed as a "call to action". Yet Michael Mann's studies were deeply flawed. Omit one or two proxies, for example, and the scary warming 'spike' disappears. Mann's model could produce hockey stick shapes using random data, such as baseball scores, or red noise. Critics alleged that Mann's choices of data and statistical tools all cooled the Medieval Warm Period, and emphasised late 20th Century warming.

At first glance it appeared there was a typo in the headlines. The national media reported that, in January, another 20,000 more jobs were lost. Somehow, the unemployment rate dropped, from 10 percent to 9.7 percent. Nobody thought this paradox was worth explaining; instead, the media’s attitude was “more good news” about the economy.

But there was other evidence of an obliterated job market hiding behind the cheerful headlines. After revising the employment numbers in 2009, The New York Times reported, “…the economy lost 150,000 jobs in December, far more than the 85,000 initially reported.” Overall in 2009, the adjusted numbers showed an additional “…1.36 million fewer jobs…” (February 5, 2010).

An Iranian assertion that construction on its second enrichment facility began only last year and further analysis of satellite photos of the site have cast fresh doubts on the Barack Obama administration's charge that the construction of the plant near Qom involved a covert decision to violate Iran's obligations to report immediately to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on any decision to build a new facility.

At a Sep. 25 briefing on the site, senior administration officials refused to provide any specific information to back up the claim that construction had begun before the March 2007 Iranian withdrawal from an agreement requiring that it inform the IAEA immediately of any decision to build a nuclear facility.

According to the prosecution, Dr. Siddiqui, 37, grabbed a US warrant officer's rifle while she was detained for questioning in July 2008 at a police station in Ghazni and fired at FBI agents and military personnel as she was pushed down to the ground. None of the US soldiers or FBI agents were injured, but US-educated Dr.Siddiqui was shot. She was charged with attempted murder and assault and other crimes.

During the trial, the prosecution admitted that there were no fingerprints on the gun she was supposed to have wrested from one of the soldiers. No bullets were recovered from the cell.

The Obama administration has apparently come up with a creative way to deal with the increasingly bleak news with regard to the
economic position of the United States in the world.  It proposes to eliminate the office in the Bureau of Labor Statistics that collects and publishes the comparative data on employment, unemployment, manufacturing productivity, and
labor costs, among other things.  You can find it right there on page 11 among the various programs that it has marked for termination. 

* The publication of inaccurate data on the potential of wave power to produce electricity around the world, which was wrongly attributed to the website of a commercial wave-energy company.

* Claims based on information in press releases and newsletters.

* New examples of statements based on student dissertations, two of which were unpublished.

* More claims which were based on reports produced by environmental pressure groups

But make no mistake, the spectre of my late, former husband Robin Cook should haunt the collective conscience of all those who have given their testimonies. The inquiry cries out for his evidence - the only minister who spoke out and walked out of a shamed government that, seven years ago, waged what Robin knew to be 'an illegal war built on a false prospectus. . . without any international authority'.

The Dutch environment minister, Jaqueline Cramer, on Wednesday demanded a thorough investigation into the 2007 report by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change after a Dutch magazine uncovered it incorrectly states 55 percent of the country lies below sea level.

“Penn State’s internal review of Michael Mann’s alleged scientific misconduct — and the university’s virtual exoneration of his behavior — ignored key evidence in the Climategate scandal. As expected, Penn State did little more than a whitewash,” reads the statement from Commonwealth Foundation, a conservative Harris-burg- based think tank.

The foundation also charges that the university committee includes employees “who have strong incentives to protect the school’s reputation and the millions of dollars it receives from global warming research grants.”

When the Labor Department released its employment figures for January 2009, it subtracted an astounding 356,000 jobs from the overall count because it felt that small companies were quietly going out of business.

It couldn't prove this was really happening.

But the department's computers made that adjustment anyway -- and much more optimistic ones over the 11 other months of 2009 -- because something called the birth/death model instructed them to do so.

The model is a guess -- and a bad one, it turns out -- at how many companies too small to be reached in the official monthly survey are creating jobs (the "birth" part) or eliminating them ("death").

What have I been saying ever sine the recession began, the Bureau of Labor Statistics use of the "birth/death" model is flawed. To adjust the monthly jobs data by a number which is computed from a ‘model' of how many businesses were created and how many closed up during any given month is simply asking for trouble in maintaining any sense of accuracy.
