Bankers Hate Peace: All Wars Are Bankers’ Wars

As Lee Fang writes: The possibility of an Iran nuclear deal depressing weapons sales was raised by Myles Walton, an analyst from Germany’s Deutsche Bank, during a Lockheed earnings call this past January 27. Walton asked Marillyn Hewson, the chief executive of Lockheed Martin, if an Iran agreement could “impede what you see as progress in foreign military sales.” Financial industry analysts such as Walton use earnings calls as an opportunity to ask publicly-traded corporations like Lockheed about issues that might harm profitability.

11 facts about gun violence in the United States

It's pretty hard to count up all the guns in the United States, especially given how varied different states' licensing and registration policies are. A 2012 Congressional Research Service report estimated that there were 310 million civilian guns in 2009: 114 million handguns, 110 million rifles, and 86 million shotguns. The Small Arms Survey, which measures gun prevalence internationally, estimated that there were 270 million in 2007. The latter estimate suggests there were 88.8 guns for every 100 people in the US in 2007; there were about 307 million people in the US in 2009, which would mean the CRS estimated there were more guns than people in America.

Anyone Care For Another Dash Of Snow?

Today's tantalizing touch of warmth (high 56?!) will be accompanied by lashing wind and thunderous rain through tonight and Friday morning, at which point we begin our descent back into the cold, icy catacombs. As Joe pointed out yesterday, Saturday's expected high of 39 is more like the normal low for this time in March, but does "normal" even mean anything anymore, man? There is a chance of snow on Saturday.

Stock market rigging is no longer a ‘conspiracy theory’

The stock market is rigged.

When I started making that claim years ago — and provided solid evidence — people scoffed. Some called it a conspiracy theory, tinfoil hats and that sort of stuff. Most people just ignored me.

But that’s not happening anymore. The dirty secret is out.

With stock prices rushing far ahead of economic reality over the last six or so years, more experts in the financial markets are coming to the same conclusion — even if they don’t fully understand how it’s being rigged or the consequences.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday vehemently denied a Wall Street Journal report, leaked by the Obama White House, that Israel spied on U.S. negotiations with Iran and then fed the intelligence to Congressional Republicans. His office’s denial was categorical and absolute, extending beyond this specific story to U.S.-targeted spying generally, claiming: “The state of Israel does not conduct espionage against the United States or Israel’s other allies.”

Terrified Sana'a residents say: 'The bodies are starting to fill the streets'

Yemenis in Sana'a have taken to social media as the city comes under air strikes from Saudi Arabia and its anti-Houthi alliance allies.

Residents described a city that was not expecting conflict and has little infrastructure to deal with it, as bombs level houses and kill civilians on the ground.

They report long lines for fuel and the sound of gunfire, with one Twitter user @amera_al_5581, saying they received a text from a friend in Yemen, saying: "The sound of bullets can be heard clearly...[he says] bodies have started to fill the streets. Prayers for your brothers".

Who was Andreas Lubitz? Germanwings co-pilot who 'intentionally killed' 150 passengers in deliberate Alps crash

Members of the Montbaur flying club where Lubitz renewed his glider license last month said he was pleased to have gained a job with Germanwings.

"He was happy he had the job with Germanwings and he was doing well," longtime club member Peter Ruecker, told AP. "He was very happy. He gave off a good feeling."

Ruecker said that Lubitz had a girlfriend. "I can't remember anything where something wasn't right," he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note the quote marks around 'intentionally killed'. People are already doubting this story. As this article indicates, there was no indication of a man ready to commit suicide and take 150 people along with him. The story of a suicide/mass murder is the product of this single French Prosecutor who is grabbing his fifteen minutes of fame with sensational claims which newspapers and TV are eager to parrot to attract audience. But not all the parts of the story are substantiated just yet. That the cockpit door was closed is a given, because of security rules. But since the digital flight recorder for the aircraft has not been recovered, there is no factual basis to claim that Lubitz intentionally altered the flight controls, or was even conscious in the cockpit. As other media have reported, the cockpit voice recorder only hears the sounds of the Captain outside the cockpit trying to get in. There are no recorded noise from within the cockpit. Hopefully the DFR will be recovered in a usable condition soon.

There is one other aspect we should look at. There have been previous crashes of airlines blamed on suicidal pilots, such as EgyptAir 990. But behind the headlines of a crazed lone-nut pilot there were indications that EgyptAir 990 was carrying a cargo to Egypt (along with high-ranking Egyptian military officers) that a third party did not wish to arrive. One major clue to the real story of that crash is that a special deep-salvage company that is an expert in toxic and radioactive cargoes was called in to recover something from the wreckage of the plane. So, it will be interesting to keep an eye on the cargo manifest for the A320.

Welfare Makes America More Entrepreneurial: Research shows that when governments provide citizens with economic security, they embolden them to take more risks.

In 1988, Ronald Reagan traveled to the Soviet Union and gave a speech at Moscow State University, making the case for capitalism. America’s secret, he argued, was its entrepreneurs, whose “courage to take risks” was responsible “for almost all the economic growth in the United States” and much of its technological edge. This risk-taking was made possible, he continued, by economic freedom, which he associated with “limited, unintrusive” government.

FLASHBACK - VANUNU'S PHOTOS OF DIMONA - 1985

Mordechai Vanunu brought his camera to work in late 1985, shortly before leaving his eight-year stint as a technician at Israel's nuclear weapons factory at Dimona.

Acting on his conscience, he carefully took about 60 photos of the top-secret labs and unique production processes involved. When some of these photos were originally published in the London Sunday Times' exposé, they confirmed his eyewitness testimony about the extent of Israel's nuclear weapons program and revealed Israel to be one of the world's top nuclear powers. To this day, the Israeli government refuses international inspection of Dimona and continues to deny the existence of its nuclear arsenal.

Garfinkle’s 2009 book, Jewcentricity: Why the Jews are praised, blamed, and used to explain just about everything is touted as an examination of “the various roles Jews are imagined to play on the world stage that they do not, in fact, actually play.”[1] It was published by Wiley, an elite, academic publisher. It is an excellent example of how books with little or no intellectual or scholarly merit are published by elite publishers if they contain positive portrayals of Jews.

One earthquake could cut off 70% of California's water supply

What do you get when you cross a record-setting drought with an earthquake? This question was recently asked on NPR, and it isn't a pleasant visual. The devastation to the precarious water supply caused by a 7.8 magnitude quake on the San Andreas Fault could sever all four aqueducts at once, cutting off more than 70 percent of the water sustaining Southern California. This is a real threat and not some doomsday prediction. This means that an estimated 18 to 22 million people are just one major earthquake away from being completely cut off from their water supply.

Family receives $2 million in damages from vaccine court; mainstream media ignores case

By setting up a special kangaroo vaccine court, the supply of vaccines continues to multiply, even after people have been damaged by them.

This is an abandonment of true judicial process and accountability, essentially giving pharmaceutical companies a license to hurt others and write it off as a cost of doing business. To pay the families off, the federal Vaccine Court requires that vaccine manufacturer hand over 75 cents to a trust fund for every vaccine dose. To this multi-billion dollar vaccine industry, this 75-cent excise tax is just part of the cost of doing business, a cost which they can offset by raising their prices paid by taxpayer funds.

In this madness, the Vaccine Court has literally become a vicious cycle of abuse.

Secret NSA Docs: Israel Intelligence in Top 3 Most Aggressive Against US

Espionage, Treason, and the Congressional Fifth Column

"Soon after the U.S. and other major powers entered negotiations last year to curtail Iran’s nuclear program, senior White House officials learned Israel was spying on the closed-door talks.

"The spying operation was part of a broader campaign by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to penetrate the negotiations and then help build a case against the emerging terms of the deal, current and former U.S. officials said. In addition to eavesdropping, Israel acquired information from confidential U.S. briefings, informants and diplomatic contacts in Europe, the officials said.

"The espionage didn’t upset the White House as much as Israel’s sharing of inside information with U.S. lawmakers and others to drain support from a high-stakes deal intended to limit Iran’s nuclear program, current and former officials said."

B.C. selling out taxpayers

So what if you could pay $2.25 not for a 500-ml bottle of water, not for a big office cooler full, but $2.25 for one million litres of water?

Sounds ridiculous given the retail price, but that’s the unbelievably low rate the BC Liberal government has given to giant multinational firm Nestle and others to extract fresh, clean groundwater to bottle and sell for exorbitant profits.

The price is so outrageous I have to repeat it - Nestle Waters Canada pays the province just $2.25 for each one million litres of water.

The total estimated price of all the water Nestle will bottle from B.C. in an entire year is - wait for it - just $562 a year.

But, if you can believe it, that’s an improvement - because until recently they got it all for free.

Saudi Arabia Imposes Naval Blockade On Red Sea Strait, Deploys 150,000 Troops As Iran Condemns Military Action

As noted earlier, the biggest significance of any Yemen conflict has little to do with its own domestic oil production, which at 133,000 bpd is negligible, but due to its location, which not only shares a border with Saudi Arabia, but more importantly due to the Bab el-Mandeb strait which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden: it is the fourth-biggest shipping chokepoint in the world by volume (3.8 million barrels a day of oil and petroleum products flowed through it in 2013) and is just 18 miles wide at its narrowest point. It’s located between Yemen, Djibouti, and Eritrea, and connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. And since to Saudi Arabia preserving the logistics of oil supply is critical, it is hardly surprising that as Egypt's Ahram Gate reported earlier, the Saudi-led Firmness Storm coalition imposed a naval blockade on Bab El-Mandab strait earlier today. The Saudi navy's western fleet has also secured Yemen's main ports including Aden and Midi.

Apps Snoop on Your Location Way More Than You Think

The title of the study, which will be presented at a conference in Seoul next month, tells you all you need to know: Your Location Has Been Shared 5,398 Times! A Field Study on Mobile App Privacy Nudging. (Link to PDF)

That’s right. More than 5,000 pings in 14 days. Once participants in the study knew how frequently data was being collected, many adjusted their settings or deleted some apps entirely. But Professor Norman Sadeh, a member of the research team that conducted the research, says the volume of location-harvesting isn’t the biggest issue.

“There are some applications where you could justify this level of frequency—think for instance of a navigation app,” Sadeh told WIRED. “So the frequency by itself is not the problem. Instead it is whether the frequency is justified, and obviously whether users are informed of these practices and have some level of control.”

Car Shot With Taser by Border Agents Bursts Into Flames: “Just How Much is the Public Going to Take?”

Dashcam video shows several Border Patrol agents descending on a vehicle at night, with one agent breaking through the passenger window and firing a taser at the driver, causing the vehicle to burst into flames.

The driver, Alex Martin, was killed in the ensuing explosion from the March 2012 incident, prompting a lawsuit filed by the victim’s family against the federal government blaming the weapon once considered “non-lethal” for igniting the fatal fire.

According to the lawsuit, the border agents refused to help save the driver, who was burned, despite having fire extinguishers in their vehicles.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s Liberal-National government last month released a report into the Australian welfare system that outlined measures aimed at slashing billions of dollars in public spending by denying welfare payments to hundreds of thousands of disabled, unemployed and other vulnerable people.

The report’s chief author, Patrick McClure, has been chief executive officer for both large charity organisations Mission Australia and St Vincent de Paul. He authored an earlier report in 2000 into the welfare system that paved the way for the further privatisation of social services and extension of punitive “mutual obligation” responsibilities for unemployed workers and others receiving welfare payments.

Obama Takes Revenge Against Israel By Ordering Secret Nuclear Program Documents Declassified

In a development that has largely been missed by mainstream media, the Pentagon early last month quietly declassified a Department of Defense top-secret document detailing Israel’s nuclear program, a highly covert topic that Israel has never formally announced to avoid a regional nuclear arms race, and which the US until now has respected by remaining silent.

But by publishing the declassified document from 1987, the US reportedly breached the silent agreement to keep quiet on Israel’s nuclear powers for the first time ever, detailing the nuclear program in great depth.

Do coordinated campaign contributions cause American policymakers to act more on behalf of Israel than the United States? Imagine a Slightly Different Announcement from Ted Cruz

We would be talking about whether he's a threat to the American way of life and whether he would impose Shariah law. But not Ted Cruz. We have to pretend to take him seriously because he's a Christian and just told the world that this is a Christian nation. We have to waste time and energy mocking this idiot, this future loser who sounds like a fifth-grade schoolmarm chiding her students for writing their cursive improperly.

But if you are a Christian devotee of Ted Cruz's and you read this, feeling even the slightest bit uncomfortable at the notion of the fantasy Muslim candidate, well, now you know how the rest of us feel about your man.

Germanwings crash: pilot locked out of plane's cockpit, say reports

New York Times and AFP news agency say evidence from cockpit voice recorder suggests pilot left before flight 4U9525’s descent and could not get back in

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is, sadly, a lot of wild speculation going on about what happened. The actual facts are that the Captain left the cockpit after the plane reached cruising height, possibly to use the bathroom, chat with the flight attendants, walk the aisle and smile at the passengers. Because of 9-11, cockpit doors may only be opened from within the cockpit. The pilot who remained in the cockpit cannot be heard on the cockpit voice recorder. Only the captain locked outside is heard screaming and pounding on the door. The French Prosecutor is leaping to a conclusion that the pilot inside the cockpit deliberately crashed the plane (probably realizing the sensation will make him famous in the media for a day or so). I am not ready to make that leap. The pilot may have lost consciousness, suffered a stroke, heart attack, and disengaged the autopilot while thrashing around. The descent, while steep, does not look like a deliberate attempt to crash the plane to me. Until they find the digital recorder, we don't know what controls were touched in the cockpit or why the outside crew did not use the alternative system to unlock the door. But airlines and aircraft manufacturers habitually blame the pilots in disasters to protect their own reputations, so IMHO all we really know is that we do not know. Yet. Obviously, the media claim that there were eyewitnesses to a mid-air explosion and smoke trailing from the aircraft before the crash was someone's attempt to grab attention.

Bibi Wins with Racism and Revoked Promise

Reality crashed down on those who had hoped the March 17 Knesset elections might lead to a more moderate future Israeli leadership.

The election returns brought the news, Benjamin Netanyahu had won again.

He won in large part by revoking his earlier pledge to support a Palestinian state, and by using last-hour racist warnings to bring out hard right voters.

“Something like scales” must be made to fall from the eyes of the American public which has been endorsing, funding and supporting a brutal military occupation for almost five decades. How will that be accomplished?

The Roots of Netanyahu’s Electoral Victory: Colonial Expansion and Fascist Ideology

Netanyahu has established the fact that Israel and its people embrace a racist ideology and receive the endorsement of most Western leaders, and mass media and the unconditional support of its overseas fifth column.

There is no question that the majority of Israeli Jewish leaders and parties support Netanyahu’s racist pronouncements and ‘no-state’ solution and joined him in a coalition government. But the larger issue is the positive mass response to Netanyahu’s call to action. Nearly three quarters of the electorate turned out (73%) to elect him. Moreover, Netanyahu has been elected prime minister for four terms: between 1996-99 and more recently 2009-20.

What is more, the opposition has not differed from the Netanyahu coalition regime’s Judeo-centric policies and pronouncements. In other words, ‘racist’ ideology per se is not what drives the Israeli majority to repeatedly support Netanyahu.

Netanyahu the Mythbuster: “Special Relationship” No More

Israel is not an American ally and there is no “special relationship”. The 4 Forms of Political and Corporate Lies

“To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” ~ George Orwell

As with most societal dynamics, there are various approaches and thought-processes we can employ to help us make sense of the unpredictable nonsense that constitutes today’s politics and corporate spin.

There are four forms of political lies.

Those involved in politics – the politicians, reporters and corporate lobbyists – are constantly lying. We all know it, we just don’t all appreciate the scope of it. Of course, there is outright lying which might be done in any number of ways, including complete conjuration and outright elimination of important information. However corporate heads, politicians and their faithful media normally prefer more nuanced presentations to their lies — so it pays to understand just how they go about it.

Four Forms of Political Lies

There are four basic types of political lies, which immediately correlate to the four basic forms of arithmetic.

3 Subjects Schools Could Teach to Improve the World

As a former teacher who spent 7 years in the system, one of the things that really bugs me about today’s schools is the undercurrent of fear and control-based social conditioning that they subject our children to. Yes, our children do learn valuable skills and information, but often at the cost of their overall health and prosperity. Our schools, while they do indeed try, ultimately fail to fully harness the power of today’s young minds because they emphasize routine, discipline and testing over exploration, compassion and innovation.

Another problem today in education is that we simply aren’t teaching kids what they really need to know to be successful in life. While it is important to learn basic math, science, and reading to survive in today’s world, it is also important to teach kids how to thrive.

We’re treating soil like dirt. It’s a fatal mistake, as our lives depend on it

It’s literally and – it seems – metaphorically, beneath us. To judge by its absence from the media, most journalists consider it unworthy of consideration. But all human life depends on it. We knew this long ago, but somehow it has been forgotten. As a Sanskrit text written in about 1500BC noted: “Upon this handful of soil our survival depends. Husband it and it will grow our food, our fuel and our shelter and surround us with beauty. Abuse it and the soil will collapse and die, taking humanity with it.”

The issue hasn’t changed, but we have. Landowners around the world are now engaged in an orgy of soil destruction so intense that, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, the world on average has just 60 more years of growing crops. Even in Britain, which is spared the tropical downpours that so quickly strip exposed soil from the land, Farmers Weekly reports, we have “only 100 harvests left”.

Financial Feudalism

Whereas before money was borrowed in order to produce growth, now it had to be borrowed, in ever-larger amounts, simply to prevent financial and industrial collapse. Consequently, interest rates on new debt were reduced all the way to zero, in something that came to be known as ZIRP, for Zero Interest Rate Policy. To make it even sweeter, central banks accepted the money they loaned out at 0% interest as deposits, which earned a tiny bit of interest, allowing banks to make a profit by doing absolutely nothing.

Unsurprisingly, doing absolutely nothing proved to be rather ineffective, and around the world economies started to shrink. Many countries resorted to forging their statistics to paint a rosier picture, but one statistic that doesn't lie is energy consumption. It is indicative of the overall level of economic activity, and it is down across the entire world. A glut of oil, and a much lower oil price, is what we are currently witnessing as a result. Another indicator that doesn't lie is the Baltic Dry Index, which tracks the level of shipping activity, and it has plummeted too.

Bondholders in Russia are making out like bandits in 2015, with corporate bondholders seeing a 7.3 percent return this year, according to Bloomberg data.

“It’s very simple advice. Bonds are much more attractive than a year ago. Risks related to the ruble have subsided, inflation is likely to moderate, the BoP (Balance of Payments) and budget situation look reasonably strong and that is why the outlook is quite favorable,” Vladimir Kolychev, Chief Economist for Russia at VTB Capital, told RT.

Ted Cruz’s website poses unnecessary security risks for donors

As it turns out, the website does use SSL when users actually submit their credit card information. But there are two big problems with the way this is implemented. One is that the lack of SSL protection for the donation page as a whole means that the user is vulnerable to a "man in the middle" attack, where someone impersonates the Cruz website and directs the user to a malicious site instead.

Second, there's no way for ordinary users to know if their credit card details are encrypted or not. For more than a decade, users have been trained to look for that lock icon before submitting personal information. The way Cruz built his website encourages users to do something dangerous: submit personal credit card information without knowing if it's secure or not.

F-35 pilots are seeing double, but it's the plane that's drunk

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter may be stealthy, powerful and expensive, but the plane's greatest threat isn't the enemy. Instead, engineers have discovered a software glitch that gives these new super fighters the technological equivalent of double vision. F-35s are equipped with Advanced Sensor Fusion, a system that's designed to collate sensor data from all of the planes and combine them into one big picture. If you have 10 jets zooming around, all of the allied pilots and commanders will, theoretically, be able to see everything that's going on.

Unfortunately, when two planes look at the same object, they do so from different angles, and the sensors can't combine that data into a single cohesive image. That means that pilots are stuck with tactical displays that offer a vague sense of where the enemy is, but not if there's one combatant or several.

Adobe Flash fix FAIL exposes world's most popular sites

Hackers Luca Carettoni and Mauro Gentile found a badly-applied four-year-old Adobe patch allows attackers to steal information and commandeer accounts for three of the world's top ten websites and 'many' others.

The LinkedIn and Minded Security researchers say the indirect Same-Origin-Policy Request Forgery and Cross-Site Request Forgery bypasses relates to a failed patch (CVE-2011-2461) issued in 2011. It is intended to fix Adobe Shockwave files that are vulnerable when built through the company's Flex software development kit compiler.
