HIPPA: Police/DHS can spy on your medical & financial records

The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPPA) is the primary federal law that addresses health records. The HIPAA privacy rules have special exceptions for law enforcement and national security investigations. The law enforcement provision is very broad. It covers all the usual police procedures, including subpoenas. Those don’t require a judge’s advance permission, and they also require much less basis than probable cause.

South Sudan Hires Ex-Blackwater Chief Erik Prince to Restore War-Damaged Oil Facilities

The former head of U.S. security company Blackwater USA, Erik Prince, was hired by South Sudan to help repair damaged oil facilities and boost output cut by a year of civil war. Prince’s Frontier Services Group Ltd. (500), a Hong Kong-listed logistics and transportation company, is being paid 18.7 million euros ($23.3 million) by South Sudan’s Ministry of Petroleum to transport supplies and perform maintenance on production facilities at the oil fields, Chief Executive Officer Gregg Smith said by phone from New York yesterday. About 30 employees including pilots, engineers and logistics technicians have been using helicopters and airplanes to reach South Sudan’s oil fields since September, Smith said.

Coalition For The Children & Family

The Coalition for the Family and Children in Israel was established in order to fight inequality in treatment of men in divorce or separation, and prevent rampant judicially approved alienation and disengagement of fathers from their children during and after divorce. Gender Inequality and Discrimination is rampant in Israeli law. It creates orphaned children to live fathers, and it devastates fathers financially and emotionally. Hundreds commit suicide every year. Others escape the State. We strive to change the law.

The Evidence That North Korea Hacked Sony Is Flimsy

But in their initial public statement, whoever hacked Sony made no mention of North Korea or the film. And in an email sent to Sony by the hackers, found in documents they leaked, there is also no mention of North Korea or the film. The email was sent to Sony executives on Nov. 21, a few days before the hack went public. Addressed to Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton, Chairwoman Amy Pascal and other executives, it appears to be an attempt at extortion, not an expression of political outrage or a threat of war.

“[M]onetary compensation we want,” the email read. “Pay the damage, or Sony Pictures will be bombarded as a whole. You know us very well. We never wait long. You’d better behave wisely.”

...

It was only on December 8, after a week of media stories connecting North Korea and the Sony film to the hack, that the attackers made their first reference to the film in one of their public announcements.

US regulators label MetLife as potential financial threat

Major insurer MetLife Inc. says U.S. regulators have labeled it as a potential threat to the financial system, a designation that brings stricter government oversight.

MetLife said Thursday that the Financial Stability Oversight Council has designated the company as “systemically important.” As a result, MetLife must increase its cushion of capital against losses, limit its use of borrowed money and submit to inspections by examiners. MetLife will come under the supervision of the Federal Reserve. Its primary regulator now is New York state.

Leaked Internal CIA Document Admits US Drone Program “Counterproductive” … Obama Did It ANYWAY

Obama Knew Drone Strikes Were Counter-Productive, But Did It Anyway

Previously-leaked documents showed that the CIA warned Obama that funding rebels doesn’t work … but Obama decided to fund the Syrian rebels anyway for cynical political gain.

Top CIA officers say that drone strikes increase terrorism (and see this). Indeed, virtually all aspects of the American “war on terror” strategy creates more terrorists and weakens our national security. And see this.

Now, a leaked internal CIA memo shows that the Agency told Obama that drone strikes might be counter-productive.

What Options at the Federal Reserve: A Global Financial Crisis is Looming?

It is being said today’s FOMC announcement is “the most important of Yellen’s tenure”, I could not disagree more. In the past I have written pieces regarding the potential announcements by the FOMC and come to the conclusion “what can they possibly say?”. This is more true now, Janet Yellen et al cannot “say” anything of substance because they cannot “do” anything of substance. The Fed backed themselves into a corner of their own making several years ago, I believe it is only a matter of time before the markets “test” them.

Collapsing oil price brings back memories of 1980s Oklahoma oil and gas bubble - Deja vu all over again

As far as I know, the fracking bubble that’s now well into its denouement didn’t have a single ineptly run bank at its center, as the Oklahoma oil and gas bubble did. Most of the other details of that earlier fiasco, though, were present and accounted for. Sky-high fuel prices, check; reserves unprofitable at earlier prices that suddenly looked like a winning deal, check; a media frenzy that oversold the upside and completely ignored the possibility of a downside, check; vast torrents of money and credit from banks and investors too dazzled by the thought of easy riches to ask the obvious questions, check; a flurry of drilling companies that lost money every single quarter but managed to stay in business by heaping up mountains of unpayable debt, check. Pretty much every square on the bingo card marked “ecoomic debacle” has been filled in with a pen dipped in fracking fluid.

Now of course a debacle of the Penn Square variety requires at least one other thing, which is a banking industry so fixated on this quarter’s profits that it can lose track of the minor little fact that lending money to people who can’t pay it back isn’t a business strategy with a long shelf life. I hope none of my readers are under the illusion that this is lacking just now.

The Folks Guide to Enhanced Interrogation Techniques

Now that the CIA’s infamous “torture report” has finally gone public, it’s time to speak of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EIT) and what folks need to know about it.

First of all, EIT is actually the sound folks make when trying to breathe on the waterboard. It’s an inside joke. Yeah, they tortured some folks… but not to gain intelligence, since they know torture doesn’t work for that. Getting some poor devil to confess under torture is not that hard, heck, they got folks to confess to the murder of Elvis and even had one guy who swore he had been laden (haven’t we all?). You see, when someone is shoving a tube up folk’s asset for Enhanced Rectal Interrogation while choking them to death, chances are folks will say pretty much anything at all to end the torture. That’s not intelligence, that’s despair. And the officials who ordered and carried out the torture are quite aware of this fact.

Claims that boys were murdered by VIP sex ring are credible and true - police

Scotland Yard has said claims by a witness that a “VIP” sex abuse ring murdered three boys are “credible and true”.

The allegations made by the witness, known by the pseudonym Nick, have triggered a murder investigation.

Police said the alleged abuse by a Westminster-based paedophile ring lasted a decade at locations across London and the Home Counties, including military premises.

Det Supt Kenny McDonald, who is leading the homicide inquiry, told a press conference on Thursday that detectives believed the witness’s claims.

The abuse was said to have taken place from 1975 to 1984, when Nick was aged between seven and 16. Some of the abuse is linked to a flat in Dolphin Square, Pimlico, London, and at times is alleged to have taken place at “parties”. Sometimes it involved groups of men and other times a lone male.

No More Khirbet Khizehs

"Fields that would never be harvested, plantations that would never be irrigated, paths that would become desolate. A sense of destruction and worthlessness. An image of thistles and brambles everywhere, a desolate tawniness, a braying wilderness. And already from those fields accusing eyes peered out at you, that silent accusatory look as of a reproachful animal, staring and following you so there was no refuge." -- Yizhar Smilansky, Khirbet Khizeh

On the day in 2014 that I read the new English translation of Khirbet Khizeh, Tom Engelhardt published a blog post rewriting recent news articles on the U.S. Senate's torture report as a 2019 Senate report on drone murders. American ‘used cars’ used by ISIS

A Texas plumber says he has no idea how his old company truck ended up in a jihadi photo from the front lines of the war in Syria produced by the militant group ISIS

The New York Daily News reported that Mark Oberholtzer of Texas City traded the company car in at a dealership in 2013 and hadn’t thought of it since.

On Monday, however, the Ansar al-Deen Front, a Syrian militant group, posted a photo featuring the black Ford F-250 pickup with an anti-aircraft gun mounted on the truck bed and the logo of Oberholtzer’s Mark-1 Plumbing Company and contact information emblazoned on the doors.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, whoever bought the truck here in the US and shipped it to ISIS is materially aiding the enemy in time of war. I think that is called treason.

'Absolute kick in the teeth': New EU ruling classing fat people as disabled sparks outrage

The European Court of Justice today ruled that an obese person can be considered to have a disability if their weight "hinders the full and effective participation of the person concerned in professional life on an equal basis with other workers".

The judgement was made following the landmark case of a Danish childminder who is believed to have weighed more than 25 stone when he was sacked more than four years ago.

But the ruling has already sparked outrage from a weight-loss expert, who described it as an "absolute kick in the teeth" for disabled people.

Steve Miller, who stars on TV show Fat Families, said: "Being fat is self–inflicted, if someone wants to lose weight they can if they decide to do something about it. Disabled people will never be able to do this.

FLASHBACK: No Debate and the New War

snip: The study evaluated discussion and debate segments on the Sunday talk shows (CNN's State of the Union, CBS's Face the Nation, ABC's This Week, Fox News Sunday and NBC's Meet the Press), the PBS NewsHour and a sample of cable news programs that feature roundtables and interview segments (CNN's Situation Room, Fox News Channel's Special Report and MSNBC's Hardball).

The key findings:

--In total, 205 sources appeared on the programs discussing military options in Syria and Iraq. Just six of these guests, or 3 percent, voiced opposition to US military intervention. There were 125 guests (61 percent) who spoke in favor of US war.

--On the high-profile Sunday talk shows, 89 guests were invited to talk about the war. But just one, Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel, could be coded as an anti-war guest.

The Jewish Cosmopolitans Have Reached The Anal Stage

Two month ago, we became aware of an utterly gross video ‘installation’ by Natalie Cohen-Waxberg. In the video, Cohen-Waxberg poo-ed over many national flags including Arab flags. Apparently, smearing other people’s symbols with human excrement is consistent with Jewish cosmopolitan ideology. At the time, I didn’t notice any Jewish Left organisations criticise Cohen-Waxberg’s production.

Soon after being caught on camera attempting to push into a toilet cabin with another man, Blumenthal gave an interview in which he expressed the worst form of vile Goy-hatred. He denounced ‘German pathology’ and referred to German sickening society,

The hatred of Jewish progressives for the Goyim and the nations of the world is cause for great concern. History reveals that it wasn’t Zionism that disturbed the National Socialists and many Europeans in the 1930’s; it was actually Jewish cosmopolitanism and cultural Marxists.

The Israel Lobby Cowbird

How Israel lobbying organizations flit about Washington, hatching operatives into the U.S. federal government to pursue a solitary goal—advancing the interests of a foreign state.

How is the Israel lobby like a swarm of cowbirds?

Cowbirds use the devious strategy of brood parasitism, arriving at the nest of more parentally-oriented birds to lay their own eggs. Cowbirds then enjoy unburdened freedom to forage and thrive while their own young are raised, fed and protected by unsuspecting parents. If an avian host dares remove the cowbird’s offspring, the host’s own eggs—if not the entire nest—will likely be destroyed by the watchful cowbird.

Iran nuclear deal within grasp

The US-Iranian negotiations for a nuclear deal are slated to resume on Monday amidst growing optimism that this could be the end of the year-long endgame under way, and an accord is in sight, finally. The US secretary of state John Kerry recently said that the effort will be to reach an accord even before the extended deadline of end-June.

The target is to reach a political agreement by March 1, 2015and a comprehensive agreement by July 1. To be sure, if there was any disappointment that the deal couldn’t be struck yet after intense talks began an year ago, that has dispelled. The mood in Tehran bazaar is “bullish”, according to New York Times, sensing that a deal with the US is in the works.

The main reason for this growing optimism is that the two sides have a good idea by now of each other’s ‘red lines’ and also the grey area where give-and-take is possible. In sum, there is no more a need for brinkmanship or grandstanding.

10 Minutes After the End of 'The Matrix' Trilogy

Morpheus and the Architect stand behind the lectern in a packed White House press room. Morpheus addresses the crowd.

"People, hear me! You are all living in a vast simulation, a prison for your mind two centuries in your future. I am here to tell you that everything is controlled by evil machines! I am here to tell you that you are now free! I am here, and feel I should add that I am not crazy!"

Murmuring from the crowd indicates that nobody believes any of this. Especially the last part. The Architect sighs, and addresses the crowd.

Memo to Sen. Warren: More young Dems want US to side with Palestine than Israel

? ? ? ? ?

In recent days, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts has offered herself as the great progressive hope of the Democratic Party by calling out Citigroup on the Senate floor and saying that the government is setting itself up for more bailouts of big banks that will rob the middle class. Lionized by MSNBC and TPM and NPR, while refusing to rule out a presidential run, Warren has plainly made the calculation that she has a lot to gain by alienating a key donor class, the financial industry; Chris Matthews says she has set herself up to run for the party’s progressive base against Hillary Clinton in 2016.

The Forgotten Christmas Truce of 1914. Unlearned Lessons which could have Prevented a Century of War

It was exactly 100 years ago this month when the Christmas Truce of 1914 occurred, when Christian soldiers on both sides of the infamous No Man’s Land of the Western Front, recognized their common humanity, dropped their guns and fraternized with the so-called enemies that they had been ordered to kill without mercy the day before. As mentioned in last week’s column, the truth of that remarkable event has since been effectively covered up by state and military authorities (and the embedded journalists at the time) because they were angered (and embarrassed) by the breakdown of military discipline.

U.S. seeks to counter Palestinian UN resolution with alternative offer, says French diplomat

The United States is creating momentum for the French to forestall, or altogether abandon, presenting a resolution to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on behalf of the Palestinians. France has been informed of an American alternative offer to the Palestinian pursuit of a draft resolution to negotiate an end Israel’s occupation of territories gained in June 1967, a French diplomatic source has told me.

Palestinian sources said they have not received any proposal from the U.S. to counter their moves at the UN. “If you have something you share it,” said a senior Palestinian official close to the arrangements. “I think what the Americans are trying to do is to delay any initiative until Israeli elections take place.”

Free Fall of the Ruble – A brilliant ploy of Russian economic Wizards? Who’s chess game?

The world is still hell-bent for hydrocarbon-based energy. Russia is the world’s largest producer of energy. Russia has recently announced that in the future she will no longer trade energy in US dollars, but in rubles and currencies of the trading partners. In fact, this rule will apply to all trading. Russia and China are detaching their economies from that of the West. To confirm this decision, in July 2014 Russia’s Gazprom concluded a 400 billion gas deal with China, and in November this year they signed an additional slightly smaller contract – all to be nominated in rubles and yuan.

Oil-Wise, Dollar-Foolish

Americans are all giddy about the drop in gas prices because they can’t see economic logic beyond the shadow of its immediate effect on their wallets. Little do they know that much of the nearly 1.2 quadrillion dollars of dodgy derivatives, the liability for which Citigroup masterfully managed to dump on American taxpayers and depositors recently, are riding on high oil prices, which have tanked and look as though they will remain that way for the foreseeable future. It’s almost certain that oil derivatives are soon to follow.

Ex-Anonymous hacker questions North Korea's role in Sony hack

Some of the investigators point to malware written in Korean, but Monsegur said that doesn't necessarily mean the hackers are Korean.

"Well, it doesn't tell me much. I've seen Russian hackers pretending to be Indian. I've seen Ukrainian hackers pretending to be Peruvian. There's hackers that pretend they're little girls. They do this for misinformation, disinformation, covering their tracks," he said. "Do you really think a bunch of nerds from North Korea are going to fly to New York and start blowing up movie theaters? No. It's not realistic. It's not about 'The interview.' It's about money. It's a professional job."

Monsegur thinks it's also possible this was an inside job, that an employee or consultant downloaded all the information from Sony's servers and then sold it to someone else.

EU coal in Israel’s sock

The bad news for Israel keeps on coming, and judging by the reactions of Israeli and U.S. politicians, more is yet to come.

The Israelis were aghast at the news that a European court found that Hamas should be removed from the EU’s terror list. Benjamin Netanyahu reacted with his predictable buffoonery and bombast, alleging that Europe has “learned nothing” from the Holocaust.

The reality is that Israel has learned nothing from several decades of warnings by its friends and allies, who have repeatedly said Israeli indifference to human rights law, the provisions of Geneva Conventions, and the realities of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict would lead only to stalemate and backlash.

ISIS’ Bloody Footprints Lead From NATO Territory

Turkey, a NATO member since 1952, has played a pivotal role in the destabilization and destruction of neighboring Syria. Since 2011, Turkey has allowed its territory to be used as a transit and staging point for sectarian terrorists flowing from around the world and into Syria in what could be described as a defacto NATO invasion by proxy.

Ukrainian Soldier Confirms: Ukraine’s Military Shot Down Malaysian MH17 Plane

A Ukrainian soldier who was part of the crew that operated the supposed missile-battery that the Ukrainian Government claims shot down the Malaysian MH17 airliner on July 17th has testified publicly for the first time, saying that the missile-battery was operated by the Ukrainian military, not by the rebels as asserted, and that he and his former crew-mates who operated it laughed when they heard their Government say that this missile-battery was operated by rebels and had shot the airliner down.

Demands for two-state solution intensify

Commenting on the issue, Lebanon’s Daily Star noted that US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Europe as sympathy for the Palestinian cause was increasing across the continent, both on the street and at a political level. “In recent weeks, parliaments in France, Spain, the UK, Portugal and Ireland have recommended that their governments formally recognise Palestine and Sweden has taken that further step. These steps have left the US in an awkward position and it has still to declare whether or not it would use its veto were a UN resolution on Palestinian statehood recognition to come up soon. Officials have also implied it is not yet set in stone how the US would vote whether a timetable for Israeli withdrawal from [occupied] East Jerusalem and the West Bank was introduced, Jordan having last month circulated a draft motion scheduling November 2016 as a deadline.”

NSA Firefoxed: Mozilla team-up with Tor to improve internet privacy

The internet browser Mozilla is teaming up with Tor to give internet users greater security online. The new Polaris project is designed to combat internet censorship and make NSA like intrusion’s a thing of the past.

Edward Snowden’s revelations concerning the extent of the National Security Agency’s spying on the general public, hit computer and internet enthusiasts hard. A poll conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the internet company Mozilla last month, found that three quarters of those surveyed feel that their personal information on the web is less secure than it was one year ago.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The comment in the article about the NSA not being able to find a TOR users identity is not entirely accurate. Recently it has come to light that if a user has the flash player installed on their computer, malicious code inside a flash object can detect the source IP of the request despite the onion network, which is why the current implementation of TOR recommends users not have the flash player installed. However I think that Mozilla and TOR will close that exploit (if they have not already done so).

As a general rule, everyone ought to be using anonymity tools and strong encryption, even if you do not really have anything to hide, to jam the NSA with added workload and confuse them as to who they should be looking at. For your local data protection or small-group communications, I strongly recommend investing the time to develop your own encryption methods using the code snippets in the NSA Challenge page as examples.

Peshawar Attack – The Empire Strikes Again

Typically, imperial powers depend on the inability of oppressed local populations to muster a unified resistance, and the most successful occupiers are skilled at exploiting the differences among the occupied. Certainly that was the story of the British Empire’s success, and its legacy of nurtured local hatreds can be seen wherever the Union Flag flew, from Muslim-Hindu hatred in Pakistan and India, to Catholic-Protestant hatred in Ireland, to, yes, Jew-Arab, hatred in modern Israel. Furthermore, two bankers close to the PBOC reportedly said the swap-line was meant to reduce the role of the US dollar if China and Russia need to help each other overcome a liquidity squeeze.

Because Ebola is spread through bodily fluids, it is only transmitted through close contact. Anti-marijuana ad's dubious claim a scary hit with parents

The assertion about lowered IQ is derived in part from a 2012 Duke University study of 38 heavy users of cannabis, but has since been challenged, notably by a British study of 2,612 young people which could find no such link.

A spokesperson for Health Canada, Eric Morrissette, cited other research published in 2012, known as the Dunedin Study, as the basis for the ad's assertion about reduced IQ.

But the House of Commons health committee reported in October that there are doubts about the Dunedin Study's conclusion. A key witness — Zach Walsh, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia — told the committee in May that "substantial concerns have been raised in various publications" about the IQ claim.

Another committee witness warned MPs against using "scare tactics" in ads, which must rather focus on "accurate information," says the report of the committee, which recommended the government launch a public-awareness campaign.

Sarah, who is required to work six days per week, aims to get rid of a package every four minutes. Even if she hits that relentless target, she’ll end up being paid a mere £7.50 per hour.

Sarah must then use part of that already tiny income to pay for petrol, specialist courier insurance, and everything else it takes to keep her delivery vehicle on the road.

‘I drive about 30 miles on each round, so even with petrol being quite cheap at the moment, I’m basically making minimum wage [£6.50],’ she says. ‘The money’s awful, but it’s a choice between this or living on benefits.’

Sarah, who is 45 and has a grown-up son, is one of tens of thousands of so-called ‘lifestyle couriers’, poorly paid contractors who are increasingly employed by delivery firms to bring shopping to our door for the lowest possible cost.

Can Liberal Zionists Count On Hillary Clinton?

For Zemel and his faithfully Democratic congregation, that hope and anxiety has come to rest most squarely on Hillary Clinton. This has happened at the same time that Clinton has staked out a firmly hawkish, pro-Israel position on Gaza and Israeli security. In August, many liberals were discouraged after reading a Clinton interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic. In it, she struck a tone on Israel that was markedly more hard-line than that of the Obama administration, generally avoiding empathy with Palestinian losses and asserting, “If I were the prime minister of Israel, you’re damn right I would expect to have control over security” on the West Bank.

Everyone thought that any major monetary policy surprises and/or capital controls today would come from Putin during his annual press conference. Boy were they wrong: just after 2 am Eastern, none other than the Swiss National Bank joined the ranks of the ECB in scrambling to stem the wave of capital flight, not to mention the cost of money, when it announced it too would start charging customers for the privilege of holding cash in its banks

Oy vey! Top ten reasons why Israel shouldn't be training American cops

From Dr. Kevin Barrett: " It seems that all that Israeli "training" (using American taxpayer money) is turning American police officers into Zionists. Is this really a good idea? Do we really need Israeli-militarized American cops driving star-of-David-decorated tanks down our streets, setting up ethnic-ID checkpoints and dropping white phosphorus and cluster bombs on our neighborhoods? Here are the top ten reasons why Israel shouldn't be brainwashing (I mean, "training") American cops.

Westminster paedophile ring linked to murders of THREE young boys by detectives

Police said today they are investigating whether members of a VIP Westminster paedophile ring murdered three young boys at 'abuse parties'.

Scotland Yard detectives are calling on witnesses to come forward if they know anything about boys being killed at Dolphin Square, a block of flats in Pimlico, London.

It is believed that every weekend in the late seventies and early eighties groups of vulnerable boys were smuggled to an address in the exclusive development by the Thames close to Parliament.

There, after being plied with alcohol, they suffered sickening sexual assaults by the rich and powerful including Tory MPs, and one victim says some children were eventually killed.

WAR CRIMES: Israel’s ‘Collective Punishment’ of Gaza Released Amid Palestinian Push for Statehood

The human rights group Amnesty International has charged that Israel was in violation of humanitarian law due to the deliberate destruction of civilian buildings in the Gaza Strip following a brutal siege over the summer dubbed Operation Brother’s Keeper.

According to a recent investigative report by Amnesty International, Israel’s actions were tantamount to war crimes based on their unjustified destruction of buildings in the Gaza Strip between August 23-26 of 2014. Even though there were no civilian casualties during the decimation of those buildings, the advocacy group report states that the ‘collective punishment’ was without justification and in clear violation of the international community.

Predictably, Israel has asserted that the buildings destroyed have been allegedly linked to Hamas and that Amnesty International has fallen prey to a conspiratorial plot crafted by Hamas. However, there has been no definitive proof offered by Israel to prove this claim.

Capital Controls for Russia

Bloomberg writer Leonid Bershidsky, under the headline, "Will Ruble's Rout Force Capital Controls?", wrote yesterday on what he called, "the probability that Russia will introduce capital controls."

He asserts his view that President Vladimir Putin is an "anti-Western, authoritarian" leader, noting that in 1998, a leader he views as having the same traits, Dr. Mahathir Muhammed, President of Malaysia, successfully implemented capital controls and brought his nation out of turmoil. Bershidsky then reviews what he calls, the "recipe" for how capital controls worked in Malaysia.

But the author also reports specifically on Putin's advisers calling for capital controls, and moreover, doing so, because Russia is under political attack from the West. He cites in particular, Sergei Markov, an advisor from a different alignment than well-known economist Sergei Glazyev, who reiterated his own policy proposals today, noted below.
