More political turmoil expected if Zardari does not ink peace deal

Pakistan could witness more political turmoil coupled with law and order problems in its sensitive Frontier Province bordering Afghanistan if President Asif Ali Zardari refuses to sign a peace deal between the provincial government and cleric Sufi Mohammad in the next few days, officials said.

New turmoil could cost him heavily as the country's powerful military, already heavily engaged in tribal areas of the country, wants peace with Swat Taliban.

Zardari said recently that as soon as peace was restored to Swat valley he would sign the agreement.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Zardari waits for a total peace in Swat before signing a peace deal, he may well be putting the entire peace process in peril.

Of course, US pressure to not be doing this is a huge factor in terms of Zardari's waiting. Unfortunately, not signing this deal will create more instability for Pakistan.

One has to wonder if this is precisely what the US wants as the outcome to justify a military coup, replacing Zardari with someone who is far more "America-centric" than Zardari has proven himself to be.
