Issuing his annual Eid al-Fitr speech today, Afghan President Hamid Karzai invited Taliban leader Mullah Omar to end the insurgency and enter into the peace process. Karzai had previously invited such talks in the past and Mullah Omar had previously indicated that he would only accept reconciliation if the NATO troops withdraw.
Karzai keenly understands that his political survival depends on power sharing with the Taliban.
There has been talk of the US holding clandestine talks with the Taliban, which I would tend to believe might be happening right now.
There needs to be a complete withdrawal of American and NATO troops, and the sooner the better.
