Coastal Crisis

As we all know, oil is still in the gulf... sitting on the sea floor and dispersed in the water collum.

But how much is near our shore?
Tonight, in a story you'll see "Only on Three"...Dan Thomas went 60-feet below the surface to find out.

Plaquemines officials: Lots of oil still coming ashore

"We continue to fight this oil every day, but often it seems the more we pick up the more there is," Nungesser said in the release. "In the past eight days we have picked up 31,905 gallons of oil/water mix in the Marshes in Bay Jimmy. In the week before that, we collected 26,375 gallons. This stuff isn't going away."

The Oil and the Turtles

“BP is responsible for the damages”—up to $50,000 per turtle, as per the Endangered Species Act—“but it is incumbent on the government to prove what [the damages] are,” says Clark. He has heard rumors that the cleanup crews on Grand Isle, Louisiana, which are mainly made up of prisoners, were bagging dead turtles and birds in plastic bags marked for incineration because no one from Fish and Wildlife responded to their calls. The F.W.S. agents were mainly focused on federally owned coastline. It may go beyond unresponsive government agencies. Clark also heard rumors that BP was deliberately burning oiled sargassum, even though living sea turtles were known to be still in the floating mats.

“All we could see was oil” says top LSU researcher on flyover; “Divers said there was oil everywhere” in shallow waters of LA coast — NOAA says clean in 5 weeks?

Moderate to heavy oil washed onto almost 100 miles of Louisiana’s shoreline this week, the federal government said Friday…

Gregory Stone, director of the Coastal Studies Institute at LSU’s School of the Coast and Environment… sent scuba divers… off of St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes. “The divers said there was oil everywhere,” Stone said. …

“There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, and we took the [helicopter] ride at high noon,” Stone said. “We could easily see into the shallow waters off of the coast and all we could see was oil. …

NOAA brainwashes gulf coast children!

Gary Ott, science support coordinator with NOAA, demonstrated the basic science behind the oil spill and its cleanup for [Houma, Louisiana middle school] students using an aquarium filled with water as the Gulf of Mexico and cooking oil mixed with Hershey’s cocoa powder to represent BP’s spilled oil.

But Ott assured them [the seafood] was safe, and set out to explain why. Ott said the presentation was aimed at dispelling fear and rumors about the BP oil spill… Other presentations at local schools are planned.

Webmaster's Commentary:

NOAA is totally out of line here! It is the parents' right to decide what food is safe for their kids to eat. NOAA is really over the line here pimping Obama's claim that the gulf is safe. It isn't! Please tell the students that NOAA was saying that 75% of the gulf oil was gone last July, only under oath before Congress NOAA admitted that 75% of the oil REMAINS! NOAA's goal here isn;t the health and safety of the children but to turn them into consumers of seafood to save BP from lawsuits by the fishing industry. Think about it; the government solution to protect BP's profits is to convince your kids to eat potentially toxic food!

State: Corexit 9527A ingredient 2-butoxyethanol “should be handled as a CARCINOGEN with EXTREME CAUTION” — NO safe level of exposure say scientists

2-Butoxy Ethanol should be handled as a CARCINOGEN–WITH EXTREME CAUTION.

The following chronic (long-term) health effects can occur at some time after exposure to 2-Butoxy Ethanol and can last for months or years:

Cancer Hazard: 2-Butoxy Ethanol may be a CARCINOGEN in humans since it has been shown to cause liver cancer in animals. Many scientists believe there is no safe level of exposure to a carcinogen.

Reproductive Hazard: 2-Butoxy Ethanol may damage the developing fetus. There is limited evidence that 2-Butoxy Ethanol may damage the male reproductive system (including decreasing the sperm count) in animals and may affect female fertility in animals.

2-Butoxy Ethanol may damage the liver and kidneys.

BP Oil Well Is Dead ... But What About the Nearby Seeps?

Sep 24 07:47

Exclusive: Gulf oil dispersant contained extremely toxic carcinogen

A major potential long-term health concern left in the wake of BP’s catastrophic oil spill is the nearly two million gallons of dispersant sprayed over and pumped into the Gulf, scientists say. Much of it was injected into the sea beneath its surface, which made both the amount used, and its use, unprecedented.

Experts urge caution for pregnant women and young children

Despite claims from President Barack Obama and federal officials that Gulf seafood is safe and poses no long-term health risks, no testing for heavy metals is occurring in fish or shellfish in areas that have been reopened to commercial and recreational fishing.

Both National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and FDA officials told Raw Story that fish and shellfish being tested for the purpose of reopening waters to commercial and recreational fishing are not being tested for heavy metals.

“Entire food web at risk” say researchers just back from Gulf: OIL “may be HIDDEN in LARGE MARINE MAMMALS” — “Discolored” zooplankton found

[While in the Gulf from September 17-19, reasearchers] found oil on the seafloor, evidence that it may be in the food chain, and signs that it may be hidden in large marine mammals.

When this starts to pile up on the sea floor, the entire food web is at risk, the researchers said. The oceanographers also discovered discolored zooplankton, which eat the food chain’s primary producers – phytoplankton – near oily clouds, [Columbia oceanographer Ajit] Subramaniam said.

Gulf seafood poses long-term health risks, experts say

Despite repeated assurances from federal officials and President Obama, independent scientists and public health experts have serious concerns about the long-term safety of Gulf seafood consumption.

Has COREXIT collapsed the North Atlantic current and triggered the next "Little Ice Age?"

It is a university level physics experiment to use a tub of cool water and inject a colored stream of warm water into it. You can see the boundary layers of the warm water stream. If you add oil to the tub it breaks down the boundary layers of the warm water stream and effectively destroys the current vorticity . This is what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Atlantic Ocean.

The entire 'river of warm water' that flows from the Caribbean to the edges of Western Europe is dying due to the Corexit that the Obama Administration allowed BP to use to hide the scale of the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster.

A nearly 35,000 square mile oil spill has almost entirely stayed off the radar and remained nearly silent in the press. Between August 21 and November 3rd 2009 there was a major oil leak off the coast of Australia that gushed out of control for months. In a scene all too familiar, the oil companies are working overtime to squash the compensation that they promised the people in the infected areas.

Nearly 18,000 fisherman were effected due to this massive plume of oil that flowed into the Timor Sea. This event was termed Australia’s worst offshore drilling rig disaster in history.

Bio-Remediation or Bio-Hazard? Dispersants, Bacteria and Illness in the Gulf

Ocean Springs, MS -- A grandmother made me rethink all the bio-remediation hype. The "naturally-occurring oil-eating bacteria" have been newsworthy of late as they are supposedly going to come to the rescue of President Obama and BP and make good on their very premature statement that "the oil is gone."

We were talking about subsurface oil in the Gulf when she said matter-of-factly, "The bacteria are running amok with the dispersants." What? "Those oil-eating bacteria -- I think they're running amok and causing skin rashes." My mind reeled. Could we all have missed something so simple?

Lawsuit asks if science was manipulated in oil spill estimates

WASHINGTON — An environmental whistleblower group charges in a lawsuit that the Obama administration is withholding documents that would reveal why it issued an estimate on the gravity of the Gulf of Mexico oil well blowout that later was proved to be far too low.

Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility sued Thursday in federal court, claiming that federal officials are withholding hundreds of pages of reports and communications between scientists on the Flow Rate Technical Group, who were tasked with making the estimates, and Marcia McNutt, the head of the U.S. Geological Survey, who chaired the technical group and released a summary of its findings.

The controversy over the oil flow estimates is part of a broader question about whether political appointees at the top of the Obama administration have manipulated and publicized incorrect or incomplete scientific information in an attempt to tamp down anxiety and anger over the world's worst oil accident.

Natural Gas From Ruptured Gulf Well Remained Trapped in Deep Waters

Perhaps it should have been called the Gulf of Mexico gas spill.

In June, while the well resisted control, scientists led by David Valentine, a microbial geochemist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, took several hundred samples of natural gas at 31 sites in a large circle around Macondo, extending to a maximum of 8 miles from the spill's epicenter. Data from their cruise, sponsored by a grant from the National Science Foundation, amount to the first independent snapshot of the immediate, short-term response triggered underwater by an onslaught of gas.

The majority of the methane, they found, remained dissolved more than 2,600 feet underwater, and the gas likely accounted for two-thirds of all the microbial activity in the undersea plumes. Based on government and BP data, some 206,000 metric tons of methane, 35,700 tons of ethane and 28,400 tons of propane snaked out into the subsurface, they estimated.

What's Going On In The Gulf?

BP and the government decided that millions of gallons of dispersants should be dumped into the Gulf to sink and hide the oil.

They succeeded in sinking it. As ABC, CBS and NPR note, huge quantities of oil are blanketing the ocean floor, killing virtually all of the sealife which lives there.

And giant new underwater plumes have been found in the water column itself.

But officials don't want to hear about them. As one member of the oil spill recovery team said:

“My biggest concern is there’s [a plume of oil] five miles by 30 miles out there that was reported and no one responded. The Coast Guard said for days that they wanted to run tests, and if they don’t test it when it’s called in, they’ll never find it”

Bacteria in the gulf mostly digested gas, not oil, study finds

The discovery tempers hopes that microorganisms have eaten up most of the spilled oil in the gulf, as other scientists had recently suggested, the lead author says.

Bacteria that attacked the plumes of oil and gas resulting from the Deepwater Horizon gusher in the Gulf of Mexico mainly digested natural gas spewing from the wellhead — propane, ethane and butane — rather than oil, according to a study published in the journal Science.

The paper doesn't rule out the possibility that bacteria also are consuming oil from the spill, the authors said. Instead, it suggests that natural gas primed the growth of bacteria that may have gone on to digest "more complex hydrocarbons" — oil — as the spill aged and propane and ethane were depleted.

U.S. requires idle wells in Gulf of Mexico to be plugged

The federal government said Wednesday that it will require oil and gas companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico to plug in nearly 3,500 non-producing wells and dismantle about 650 production platforms that are no longer being used.

"We have placed the industry on notice that they will be held to the highest standards of planning and operations in developing leases and today's notice reiterates that mandate," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a statement.

The order issued requires operators to plug wells that have not been used in five years. The 3,500 wells are currently capped with a "subsurface safety valve," according to the Interior Department.

Federal regulations already require idle wells, platforms and pipelines to be decommissioned -- a process that involves plugging wells and dismantling and removing platform structures and pipelines -- within one year of the lease's expiration date.

Where's the oil? On the Gulf floor, scientists say

"I expected to find oil on the sea floor," Joye said Monday morning in a ship-to-shore telephone interview. "I did not expect to find this much. I didn't expect to find layers two inches thick. It's weird the stuff we found last night. Some of it was really dense and thick."

Joye said 10 of her 14 samples showed visible oil, including all the ones taken north of the busted well. She found oil on the sea floor as far as 80 miles away from the site of the spill.

"SLIME HIGHWAY"

The Gulf of Mexico's sea floor is covered for miles with a "fluffy and porous" layer of oil, scientists discovered Sunday night and Monday morning, and it's beyond anything produced by natural oil seeps. "I've collected literally hundreds of sediment cores from the Gulf of Mexico, including around this area," says University of Georgia marine scientist Samantha Joye. "And I've never seen anything like this." The oily fluff is more than 2 inches thick in some places, and in addition to being studded with tiny tar balls, it has also trapped a menagerie of dead shrimp, worms and other invertebrates.

The Importance of a Bugout Bag

Since the beginning of May I’ve been watching the oil disaster unfold in the Gulf of Mexico. The ongoing tragedy made me realize that I wasn’t prepared for it as much as I should be. So I came to the conclusion that I at least needed to put a bugout bag together.

A bugout bag is something that everyone should have, whether or not they have a disaster on their doorstep. A bag can be something as simple as a duffle bag with a few survival tools in it, or it can be as complex as a large frame pack containing hundreds of items...

PROOF -- BP Deepwater Horizon Drilled TWO Wells That Blew Out on FEB 13 and APR 20

Look at the positions on the map to see where the first abandoned and blown out well is positioned in relation to the current well they supposedly capped. The first well, WELL A, has been spewing oil into the Gulf since February 13, 2010. WELL B (meant to be a relief well) commenced on or about February 20 and blew up Deepwater Horizon on April 20.

Look at the plans and the facts. Look at the maps. Do searches and see for yourself. All that's necessary is to read what has already been revealed.

National Security Used As Pretext to Confiscate Samples and Notes On Dispersant, Homeland Security Works For BP

I’m an adjunct professor here at A&M, and we were also in the Gulf, but got thrown out. We were testing a theory that the chemical composition of the dispersant they were using was causing the oil to sink. And we’d been there for approximately three days, and federal agents flat told us to get out. And it wasn’t Fish and Wildlife officers. These were Homeland Security officers, and we were told that it was in the interest of national security.

So basically The Department of Homeland Security is working FOR BP!? This is open treason and should be prosecuted accordingly! If this was just a normal oil disaster why would Homeland Security be confiscating scientific samples?

Oil From the BP Spill Found at Bottom of Gulf

Professor Samantha Joye of the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Georgia, who is conducting a study on a research vessel just two miles from the spill zone, said the oil has not disappeared, but is on the sea floor in a layer of scum.

"We're finding it everywhere that we've looked. The oil is not gone," Joye said. "It's in places where nobody has looked for it."

All 13 of the core samples Joye and her UGA team have collected from the bottom of the gulf are showing oil from the spill, she said.

BP And Partners Say Most Victims Not Yet Entitled to Sue

BP and its partners in the blown-out Gulf well said on Monday that thousands of fishermen, seafood processors, restaurants, hotel owners and others may not yet have the right to sue over the spill, according to court papers.

BP and its partners such as Transocean Ltd and Halliburton Co said the majority of alleged victims who have brought about 400 lawsuits must first take their claims to a $20 billion fund established by BP.

The $20 billion fund is dependent upon the US granting BP continued access to deep water drilling.

Nungesser added “There is no testing going on to determine if it’s from the oil spill.”

And according to the AP, “Plaquemines Parish officials have asked state wildlife experts to investigate… Parish officials say the fish were found in an area that has been impacted by oil from the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Gulf Clean Up Contracts Expose Corruption as Usual

WASHINGTON — The federal government hired a New Orleans man for $18,000 to appraise whether news stories about its actions in the Gulf oil spill were positive or negative for the Obama administration, which was keenly sensitive to comparisons between its response and former President George W. Bush's much-maligned reaction to Hurricane Katrina.

The government also spent $10,000 for just over three minutes of video showing a routine offshore rig inspection for news organizations but couldn't say whether any ran the footage. And it awarded a $216,625 no-bid contract for a survey of seabirds to an environmental group that has criticized what it calls the "extreme anti-conservation record" of Sarah Palin, a possible 2012 rival to President Barack Obama.

10 Reasons Our Fresh Water Supply is in Deep Trouble

Jeffrey Green

Fresh clean water is essential to all life forms. It seems that a resource so vital should not be corralled, controlled, or corrupted by any corporation or government. However, with fresh water supplies under assault on multiple fronts, governments seek to further clamp down on individual human usage, while doing very little to reduce the reasons for the contamination. At the same time, corporations that repackage water and sell it back to the public enjoy financial benefits from the scarcity of their "product."

Scientists Find Thick Layer Of Oil On Seafloor

Scientists on a research vessel in the Gulf of Mexico are finding a substantial layer of oily sediment stretching for dozens of miles in all directions. Their discovery suggests that a lot of oil from the Deepwater Horizon didn't simply evaporate or dissipate into the water — it has settled to the seafloor.

The Research Vessel Oceanus sailed on Aug. 21 on a mission to figure out what happened to the more than 4 million barrels of oil that gushed into the water. Onboard, Samantha Joye, a professor in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Georgia, says she suddenly has a pretty good idea about where a lot of it ended up. It's showing up in samples of the seafloor, between the well site and the coast.

Transocean, Halliburton blast BP report on cause of blowout, oil spill

Halliburton and Transocean on Wednesday rejected BP's characterization.

"This is a self-serving report that attempts to conceal the critical factor that set the stage for the Macondo incident: BP's fatally flawed well design. In both its design and construction, BP made a series of cost-saving decisions that increased risk – in some cases, severely," Transocean said in a statement.

Among BP's cost-saving moves that Transocean said compromised safety are the following:

1) BP opted for a single long run of pipe rather than an alternative approach that would have increased the barriers to gas flow.

2) BP failed to conduct a "cement bond log" test to evaluate the integrity of the cement at the bottom of the well, which was what blocked gas and oil from emerging up the production pipe.

3) BP installed fewer than one-third of the recommended number of centralizer devices, which Transocean said had the effect of "dramatically increasing the risk of cement channeling and gas flow."

Halliburton, for its part, said BP officials were in charge and signed off on every step of its work as it pumped concrete to the bottom of the well to block the emergence of oil and gas.

U.S. Government Loaned Mexican Government More Than $1 Billion to Drill Oil in Gulf of Mexico Last Year; Has $1 Billion More Planned For This Year

The U.S. Export-Import Bank, an independent federal agency, loaned more than $1 billion to the Mexican state oil company PEMEX in 2009 to support the company’s oil drilling in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The bank has another $1 billion in loans in the pipeline for 2010, unless Congress objects.

BP deflected much of the blame for a rig blast that led to the United States' worst-ever oil spill, releasing an internal report on Wednesday which said that drilling contractor Transocean had missed danger signs.

BP defended its much-criticized well design and said failures on the rig, operated by Transocean, led to gas swamping the platform and creating the conditions for the explosion.

"Over a 40-minute period, the Transocean rig crew failed to recognize and act on the influx of hydrocarbons into the well," BP said in a statement.

No Safe Harbor on Gulf Coast; Human Blood Tests Show Dangerous Levels of Toxic Exposure

Even as BP and US government officials continue to declare the oil spill over at Mississippi Canyon 252 and the cleanup operation an unqualified success, for the first time blood tests on sickened humans have shown signs of exposure to high levels of toxic chemicals related to crude oil and dispersants. Some of the individuals tested have not been on the beaches, were not involved in any cleanup operations or in the Gulf water -- they simply live along the Gulf Coast. On August 29th, Lord Stirling issued a scary report warning that "The North Atlantic Current is Gone". We were hesitant to post the article before checking with sources to confirm it's validity. After such research, many of the claims that Lord Stirling makes do indeed have some scientific evidence. However, his claims that the North Atlantic Current is "gone" and that the cause is primarily the Gulf oil disaster and subsequent dispersant spraying are slightly premature. Despite these assumptions, Stirling's report has enough support to cause alarm:

BP ultimatum: Let us drill or funds will dry up

Oil giant BP is telling lawmakers that if it isn't allowed to get new offshore drilling permits in the Gulf, it will not be able to afford to pay for the damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the New York Times reported in its Friday edition.

The Times reports the UK-based oil giant is on the warpath against a drilling reform bill passed by the House earlier this summer that would effectively bar BP from getting new drilling permits in the US.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In a normal world, where representatives of the people of the country actually determined what when on in the country, this threat would be characterized as "blackmail"; however, because BP has certain "male attributes" they are able to squeeze very forcibly in both the White House and Congress, I would almost bet that BP will get those new offshore drilling permits.

Many conflicting reports have come out of the gulf area concerning all aspects of the spill.

Attempting to understand the environmental and health risk associated with the gulf oil spill only raised more unanswered questions. Finding those answers from BP or other Governmental agencies only raised a vale over the spill.

Corporate Meteors Strike US Gulf (They Got the Whole World In Their Hands)

Perhaps the British Petroleum/Nalco event was the wakeup call we needed in order to look more closely at untouchable corporations that began running the whole world 100 years ago. This is a paper about corporate communism, which is otherwise known as "monopolies" that are now rampant in the US. Monopolies always engage in conspiracy, and their first goal is to conspire to eliminate their competition and choices, establish control over prices and the masses by an elite few. The April 20, 2010, BP oil catastrophe in America's Gulf can be described as a monumental corporate conspiracy. BP was permitted by cronies to dig a hole to China off Louisiana's shores without safety measures or concern for the Gulf's marine ecosystem.

Across the harbor at the end of the public pier, four large white plastic containers sit on pallets labeled: "Nalco Corexit EC9005A. Oil Spill dispersant. Caution: may cause irritation with prolonged contact…do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing...." Some of the containers have black hand-written letters on the back that says "oil waste water" or "clean water." BP Using Gulf Oil Spill Victims As Pawns To Pressure Alabama To Drop Charges

Oil Tests Positive for Dispersants in the Mississippi Sound

Lumpy, degraded oil collected in the Mississippi Sound has tested positive for several of the main ingredients in the Corexit dispersant used in connection with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, according to scientists working for a New Orleans-based lawyer.

Officials with the federal government and BP PLC have maintained throughout the oil spill that no dispersant products have been used near shorelines in Alabama or Mississippi.

Tests find sickened family has 50.3 ppm of Corexit’s 2-butoxyethanol in swimming pool

“Our heads are still swimming,” stated Barbara Schebler of Homosassa, Florida, who received word last Friday that test results on the water from her family’s swimming pool showed 50.3 ppm of 2-butoxyethanol, a marker for the dispersant Corexit 9527A used to break up and sink BP’s oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

The problems began for the Scheblers a few weeks after the April 20 blow-out. “Our first clue were rashes we both got early in May. Both my husband and I couldn’t get rid of the rashes and had to get cream from our doctor,” Schebler noted, “I never had a rash in my life.”

The Gulf Blue Plague is Evolving - Part II: Corexit + Bacteria = Mutated Viruses

The mutagenic achievement of certain chemical agents was first discovered in the former USSR. In 1946, the mutagenic properties of formaldehyde and mustard gas were discovered. Since then, many hundreds of chemical mutagens have been established.

It’s only in microorganisms (such as bacteria and viruses) that some chemical mutagens can drastically increase the mutation rate of certain genes over the mutation rate of the other genes. Chemical mutagens are responsible for a greater number of mutations than are physical mutagens.

‘Blue Flu’ cases spreading around Gulf

“Blue Flu” infecting people along the Gulf of Mexico, other southern states?

Some people are calling it the BP Flu. But it is commonly being called the Blue Flu, because the alleged symptoms include blue lips and skin; and it’s scaring the hell out of people all around the Gulf area –from Texas to Florida.

This Blue Flu is separate from people experiencing something called TILT, or “Toxic-Induced Loss of Tolerance.” TILT is something that hit some of the folks who had been working on the massive cleanup surrounding the oil spill. Symptoms from TILT include eyes and skin being irritated, headaches and dizzines.

People with TILT are typically those who were in the immediate area of the spill, mostly those directly involved with the cleanup. Those suffering from Blue Flu are an entirely different matter. These are people who were not in direct contact with the spill, or the cleanup chemicals. They simply live in the south, near the Gulf.

Symptoms include swollen glands, notably in the neck, fever, vomiting, headache, bluish lip color, numbness in fingers and toes. The most alarming symptom being reported is “severe symptomatic cyanosis.” This is the entire body turning blue, a discoloration of the skin.

Large Oil-Corexit Plumes, Fish Kill Coverup and Wackenhut(Photos)

Pictures of freshly sprayed dispersant and a new fish kill.

Everyday it seems we get more and more proof that oil and dispersant are still poisoning the Gulf of Mexico. Project Gulf Impact recently took their second boat trip in the last week. The first trip brought us photos of freshly sprayed dispersant, totally destroying the myth that this disaster is reaching its end.

Large oil and dispersant plumes still linger, continually poisoning and destroying our precious oceans. Internal BP documents show that there were not one but TWO wells, raising the possibility that the ROV cameras may have never been placed near the real leak.

“We’re seeing way more dispersant than ever before” Large, thick oil plumes, freshly sprayed with poison!

Today, Project Gulf Impact is out on the waters in and around Orange Beach Alabama. What they have found is exactly the opposite of what BP and the federal government have told the American people. Not only did they find oil but they apparently found what looks to be freshly sprayed dispersant, still in powder form.

Why is this toxic dispersant still being sprayed? Warnings from scientists and independent journalists have indicated that Corexit could effect the gulf for at least twenty years.

The twisted tale of the missing 3rd well that blew at the Macondo Prospect

TransOcean Marianas first drilled at Well A from 7 Oct till 9 Nov 2009. On 28th Oct 2009 Tony Hayward (CEO of BP) disposed 220,000 shares on the same day the Marianas reported some serious well problems which lasted till 31 Oct 2009. Ten (10) days later (on 9 Nov 2009) the well was officially abandoned due to damages sustained from Hurricane Ida. The total depth drilled was only 4,023ft (1,226m) below mud line (bml). On 17th Nov 2009, Byron E Grote another BP Director sold 150,000 of his BP share holding.

On 3rd Feb 2010 the Deepwater Horizon (owned and operated by TransOcean) was directed to drill Well A, by re-entering the previously abandoned well. BP has maintained that this was the only well drilled in February till the blowout on 20 April 2010. The well apparently took a total of 10.5 weeks to reach the targeted reservoir at 18,000 ft bml around 16 April; 6.5 weeks longer than expected. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) caught fire in a blowout 4 days later (on 20 April 2010) which resulted in the worst ever mega-oil spill disaster experienced during peace time.

BP Gulf Oil Spill's Walking Dead

Millions exposed to uncontrolled hemorrhaging, lesions, cancers

Recently, frustrated scientists presented evidence that millions of Gulf area residents were poisoned by the BP Gulf disaster. Worse, they believe that millions more could be exposed to long term poisoning.

Yet other than those worried scientists few seemed to care.

Now more frightening evidence has emerged: areas of the Gulf Coast may have been saturated with high levels of benzene, hydrogen sulfide and radioactive hydrocarbon effluents--three deadly substances that can cause disease and death years after the initial exposures.

----Addendum----

"Benzene and Other Toxic Solvents and Chemicals" - Benzene is a known human carcinogen. Work-related exposure to benzene has been linked to the development of blood cancers and blood disorders. Examples of blood diseases that may be caused by occupational benzene exposure include acute myelogenous leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (which can progress into acute myelogenous leukemia over time), aplastic anemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Certain other toxic solvents and chemicals may also be a cause of blood cancers and disorders. Link: http://www.leukemiainfocenter.com/Benzene_Toxicity.html

Radioactivity exposure: air, water, food supply
“Radioactive Hydrocarbon Effluent ...from oil and which possesses higher levels of radium isotopes. The deeper the petroleum reserves, the more likely the reservoirs of oil and methane in those geological formations will contain uranium, thorium or radium. Given the elevated levels of radioactivity at the source, the level of radioactivity associated with the hydrocarbon effluent coming out of the well will inevitably be impacted. Radium isotopes have inherent health risks that ought to be identified and properly disseminated. The concerned resident of the Gulf Coast may want to initiate him/herself in the area of health impacts due to long-term exposure to low grade radioactivity. Of course, the seafood, the waters and the beaches all provide different vehicles for such contamination to take place, each with varying consequences.'

Moreover, Naman said that he searched for the main ingredient in the less toxic version of Corexit 9500 - propylene glycol - but there was none present.

Since BP and Nalco say that no dispersant containing 2-butoxyethanol has been sprayed in the Gulf for many months, that either means:

(1) BP has been lying, and it is still using 2-butoxyethanol. In other words, BP is still Corexit 9527 in the Gulf

or

(2) The dispersant isn't breaking down nearly as quickly as hoped, and the more toxic form of Corexit used long ago is still present in the Gulf.

BP was warned of gas danger, contractor says

A contractor to BP testified Tuesday that he warned BP that it risked gas leaks in the Macondo well if it cut back on stabilizers for the pipe going down the hole. The warning, he told the Coast Guard-led inquiry into the disaster, was sent via e-mails to BP engineers, including one who refused to testify on Tuesday.

Jesse Gagliano, a technical advisor for Halliburton, which was contracted to cement the well, testified that two days before the explosion he sent BP a computer model showing severe risk of gas flowing into the cemented well if it used fewer than seven "centralizers" at different depths of the pipe.
