Ceasefire? A hollow victory indeed

There was more bad news for Israel. The IDF launched a major air and ground military offensives and did not come close to destroying its adversaries’ leadership, organization, military capabilities and alliances. During the seven weeks of brutal attacks against the densely-populated civilian centers, Israel managed to put the Palestinian issue back on the Arab map, draw unprecedented global censure, and give wings to the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) campaign to undermine Israel’s economy. Israel also managed to unify Palestinian political parties across the board – a minor miracle – and make regional heroes out of the “Palestinian Resistance.” With every lash of Israel’s whip, Palestinians found new determination to break the siege of Gaza and end Israel’s occupation.

Jewish State and Islamic State, Like Breeds Like

When the US and its allies say they are doing what is right by humanity, and by their values, the question begging to be asked is where is their humanity and values in regard to the Palestinian people, and why are they not equally doing what is right by humanity, and by their values towards “the Jewish State” and its aggression, crimes and gross violations of human rights, international law and resolutions? — Ali Kazak(former Palestinian ambassador to Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, East Timor and the South Pacific region)

The US behaves like a lion and a superpower with Russia, China and other countries but like a pussy cat and a banana republic when dealing with Israel.

US President Barack Obama said in his recent speech broadcast live to the nation “This is American leadership at its best: We stand with people who fight for their own freedom. And we rally other nations on behalf of our common security and common humanity.” He should try saying this to the Palestinian people.

ISIS Beheadings on Cue from Washington and London?

The question is this: are these shocking executions, with their highly stylized graphic videos, being used to manipulate public consent for Western military intervention in Syria? In that case, ISIS is not acting in some apparent rogue fashion, turning on its Western intelligence masters, but rather it is obeying orders as usual as part of a macabre charade to facilitate Western military intervention.

A meeting this week in Paris will allegedly firm up military tactics on how the US-led coalition will carry out its putative strikes. So far, Washington has said that it will not be committing ground troops as in the previous Iraq War (2003-2012) and the ongoing US-led campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Obama said the modus operandi against ISIS would be like its “counter-terror operations in Yemen and Somalia”, where US air power is assisted by “partners on the ground”.

U.S. Fear/War Mongers Win This Round

The fear/war mongers got to the New York Times editorial board between May 23, 2013 and September 10, 2014. The Times and President Obama both gave in to the wrong people.

The American public doesn’t want to go to war unless there is something out there that frightens them.

This explains why all of our wars have been preceded by dire warnings of what will happen if we don’t militarily engage the enemy.
In President Obama’s Wednesday night speech, he repudiated his own caution and prudence by falling in line with those who think there is no fear out there that war cannot overcome.

The New York Times editorial board sonorously endorsed the President’s decision under a headline that informs the nation that the drums of war have had their effect: “The Attack on ISIS Expands to Syria,”

Obama takes hypocrisy to new high levels

In laying out his plans to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIS, President Obama said this: “America, our endless blessings bestow an enduring burden. But as Americans, we welcome our responsibility to lead. From Europe to Asia, from the far reaches of Africa to war-torn capitals of the Middle East, we stand for freedom, for justice, for dignity. These are values that have guided our nation since its founding.”

There’s an old English, somewhat vulgar, four-letter word which in my view sums up that statement. CRAP. (The dictionary definition of it is “excrement, rubbish, dirt, worthless nonsense.”)

An informed visitor from another planet who listened to Obama would scratch his head and say, “Has the president not heard about the occupied and oppressed Palestinians and their long struggle for freedom, justice and dignity?”

Amnesty International urges Egypt to withdraw NGO law

Amnesty International called for “urgent action” against the “draconian” Law on Associations (Law 84/2002) calling on activists to write to the Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly, in a statement released on Wednesday.

“The authorities are continuing to propose new legislation that would give them sweeping powers over NGO registration, funding and activities,” the Amnesty International statement read.

On 18 July, the Ministry of Social Solidarity warned all NGOs to register under Law 84 by 2 September or “be held accountable according to the law”.

The Egyptian authorities decided on 31 August to extend a deadline for NGOs to register until 10 November, asserting that non-registered NGOs will face the threat of “accountability” measures, which are likely to include closure and criminal prosecution.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The Egyptian law does not ban NGOs, but asks NGOs to register and show where they get their money and show their bank accounts, something that Putin did also in Russia after Pussy riots in Russia during the last presidential elections. NGOs have been exposed as fronts for US Government overthrows of other governments, including USAID and CANVAS which toppled the elected government of Ukraine last January.

That Amnesty International is trying to protect the sources of funding for NGOs suggest that they are also a covert front group for intelligence operations!

(or, how to avert nuclear war, public or private)

remember, everyone, when things get heated, to CALM DOWN.

there is a point in any conflictual communication where one feels one absolutely must raise one's (virtual) voice, lose one's cool; where not to do so is a detriment to oneself and the meaning in one's life.

soon as the emotional barbs are answered in kind, one might as well give up. 'Innocent until proven guilty' -- how one feels and where one draws the line of acceptable stretching of the truth is not as important.

-- 'to protect my honor' or to 'back up my principles' or 'to protect' others -- worse, to 'not lose face' --

these are the game changers, the seemingly unique and rare set of events that will suddenly convince a large number of people to get involved, people who steadfastly opposed getting involved up to that point.

Leading rights groups and TDs call for release of Irish teen held in Egypt

Rights groups including Reprieve and Amnesty International have joined MEPs, parliamentarians, academics, teaching unions and student groups in calling on the Irish government to secure the release of an Irish teen facing the death penalty in Egypt.

Ibrahim Halawa, a student from Firhouse in County Dublin, was 17 at the time of his arrest in Egypt in August 2013, when he was caught up in the turmoil surrounding protests against the new military government. Detained in a series of adult prisons since, he has been tortured and held in solitary confinement, and has reported being singled out for special abuse because of his Irish nationality.

Anthony Lawson : The Crocodile Tears of the Press Corps Crying: Freedom!

As we approach the 13th anniversary of the events that changed the world, forever, if seems appropriate to list some examples of what the mainstream media—with all of its freedoms intact, at least in those days—totally ignored or dismissed as being wild conspiracy theories. I’m talking about the most obvious anomalies regarding the attacks of September 11th, 2001. Even after the 9/11 Commission Report was released, how many so-called journalists questioned these anomalies? So I am going to redress that, in retrospect, with a short sample of some of the headlines that never saw the light of day, but should have.

Considering the enormity of the events and the fact that Benjamin Netanyahu went on record on the day, stating: “It’s very good. Well, not very good, but it will generate immediate sympathy....” Why was this headline not seen anywhere?

Miko Peled talks of Changing the Conversation on Palestine.

"Connecting Gaza back to Palestine"

He began by saying: “To understand what happened in Gaza recently, you must go back to Balfour and to 1947”

“It is impossible to talk about Gaza, without talking about 1947 and 1948 and so on…”

He notes an attempt is being made to isolate Gaza from the rest of Palestine. Which is what Israel, the U.S. and the Europeans have been doing. By isolating it, they are stopping the solution.

Palestine is not Gaza and the West Bank. Palestine is the Galilee, it is Jerusalem, it is Jaffa and it is Haifa, it is the entire country, he notes.

The Peace talks and all these so-called efforts is an attempt to bring the Palestinians to surrender. But, the Palestinians will not surrender. And Hamas will not go away.

Hamas is an resistance organization. It was established as a result of a brutal Oppression and Occupation.

Members of UAE 'aid convoy' revealed as intelligence agents

Forty members of the UAE "aid convoy" which entered the Gaza Strip last week have been revealed as intelligence agents. They were, it is believed, trying to collect information about Hamas and its infrastructure in the besieged territory.

Other members of the "aid convoy" then made contact with officials in the United Arab Emirates. In turn, they asked disgraced Fatah official Mohamed Dahlan, who now lives in and is sponsored by the UAE government, to try to secure a safe and swift exit for the agents.

Israel approves, Hamas rejects Egyptian-proposed Gaza truce

Israel sees in the Egyptian-proposed Gaza truce an opportunity to strip the Palestinian enclave of rockets but is prepared to redouble military action there if the cross-border launches persist, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Recently-returned-to-US-puppet-rule Egypt suggested that HAMAS surrender all of its weapons, but leave Israel's occupation and starvation blockade intact. This means that the next time Israel pulls a false-flag and launches an unprovoked attack, Palestine would be wholly defensive. I can see why HAMAS rejected this deal.

HAMAS is offering a counter deal in which Israel ends the occupation and opens the borders, but Israel is refusing that offer as their real goal is recapture of the land and the natural gas fields off of the coast of Gaza.

Fearing jihadi attack on Israeli planes, Egypt sends troops to border

The Egyptian military has deployed a large military force near the border crossing with Israel at Taba in order to prevent rocket and missile attacks on Israel, and especially on Israeli civilian airplanes

Egyptian sources estimate the force is about the size of a battalion, or several hundred men. The move was coordinated with Israel.

Egypt is concerned that jihadist operatives in the Sinai Peninsula who are affiliated with al-Qaeda may try to down an Israeli civilian aircraft flying near the border during its approach for landing in the resort town of Eilat.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In Egypt, some see first salvo in Mubarak succession plan

The long-held suspicion among Egyptians that President Hosni Mubarak is grooming his son Gamal to replace him one day is crystallizing into a widespread belief. There are now signs that “one day” may be as close as next year.

As President Mubarak hosts the next round of peace talks in Sharm El Sheikh today, some say he’s sending a message to both the Americans and the Israelis that Gamal is the safest choice to preserve Egypt’s peace with Israel, which is deeply unpopular among the Egyptian public, and its role in shepherding the negotiations.

Israel’s Attack On Egypt In June ’67 Was Not ‘Preemptive'

It is often claimed that Israel's attack on Egypt that began the June 1967 "Six Day War" was a "preemptive" one. Implicit in that description is the notion that Israel was under imminent threat of an attack from Egypt. Yet this historical interpretation of the war is not sustained by the documentary record.

The President of Egypt, then known as the United Arab Republic (UAR), Gamal Abdel Nasser, later conveyed to U.S. President Lyndon Johnson that his troop buildup in the Sinai Peninsula prior to the war had been to defend against a feared Israeli attack.

Israel's June 5, 1967 surprise attack on Egypt resulted in the obliteration of Egypt's air force while most of its planes were still on the ground.

Egypt to keep border with impoverished Gaza Strip open

After three years of cooperating in the Israeli blockade of Gaza, Egypt said that it will leave its border with the Palestinian territory open indefinitely for humanitarian aid and restricted travel. With international pressure building to ease the blockade, an Egyptian security official said on Monday that sealing off Hamas-ruled Gaza has only bred more militancy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The blockade is finished. There is therefore no need for Obama to make any deals with Israel to limit the scope of an international investigation into the attack on the aid flotilla in international waters.

Obama will make that deal anyway, because any investigation will only remind the American people how the US Government shamelessly turned its back on its own citizens in the rush to protect Israel from criticism.

More than 5,000 Palestinians cross newly opened Gaza-Egypt border

More than 5,000 Palestinians have crossed the border between Gaza and Egypt since the Egyptian president ordered it opened eight days ago, border security sources said on Tuesday.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak opened the crossing in the border town of Rafah in response to Israel's raid on an aid flotilla bound for the besieged Gaza Strip, which left nine activists dead.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This could possibly be seen as a calculated election year ploy by Mubarak, (Egyptian Parliamentary elections will be held in October of this year) as the lot of the average Egyptian hasn't really gotten very much better under his watch.

Egypt: Gaza Blockade A Failure

An Egyptian security official declared the blockade of Gaza a failure Monday and said his country will keep its border with the Palestinian territory open indefinitely.

Keeping that crossing point open long term would ease the blockade imposed by Israel three years ago to isolate and punish Gaza's Hamas rulers. It also restores a link to the outside the world for some of Gaza's 1.5 million Palestinians.

Egypt Restores Oldest Monastery In The World

Egypt's chief archaeologist unveiled on Thursday an extensive renovation of the oldest monastery in the world, touting the work at the 1,600 year-old-site as a symbol of peaceful coexistence between the country's Muslims and Christians.

It's the message Egypt's government has been emphasizing ever since a lethal drive-by shooting at a church a month ago in a southern town: No troubles here – dismissing new worries over sectarian divisions between Egypt's mainly Muslim population and the large Christian minority.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Religion of any stripe can be used to promote kindness, charity, and interfaith respect...or the most horrendous types of hatred, bigotry, and slaughter.

Let us hope the "adults in the room" in positions of leadership in Islamic and Coptic Christian communities work to nurture that respect.

And even if the timing of this announcement is this is just a PR stunt on the part of the Egyptian government, remember: the work on this started almost a decade ago.

There are people in the Muslim world, like Dr. Hawass and his archeological team, who understand that Egypt has been host to a number of other religious traditions, including Judaism, and Christianity.

“We flatly reject Egypt’s offer of a token gesture. We refuse to whitewash the siege of Gaza,” said Ziyaad Lunat a member of the march’s Coordinating Committee in a statement.

“Our group will continue working to get all 1,362 marchers into Gaza as one step towards the ultimate goal for the complete end of the siege and the liberation of Palestine,” he added.

The Freedom March will walk the 41 kilometers from the southern end of Gaza at the Rafah crossing to the northern end at Israel’s Erez crossing; the march was scheduled to take place on Thursday...

Gaza Freedom Marchers: 38 detained by Egypt

London – Ma’an – Egyptian security forces detained 38 participants of the Gaza Freedom March from a hotel in Al-Arish on Sunday at noon, according to a statement issued by the event’s organizers.

“Egyptian security forces detained a group of 30 internationals in their hotel in el-Arish and another group of 8 at the bus station. They also broke up a memorial action commemorating the Cast Lead massacre at the Kasr al Nil Bridge,” the statement asserted.

The Freedom March plans to bring more than 1,000 international protesters to Gaza this week to denounce the blockade of the Palestinian territory.

Egypt Says It Will Block International Gaza Freedom Marchers

On December 31, together with more than 1000 peace advocates from around the world, I’m planning to join tens of thousands of Palestinians in a march in Gaza to the Erez border crossing to protest the Israeli blockade of Gaza, and to demand international action to relieve Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

Unfortunately, it appears that the Egyptian government has just announced that it will not allow the internationals to enter Gaza as planned. If so, that would be a shame.

Egypt digs underground wall to stop Gaza tunnels

Residents of Rafah, the border town which has become the centre for a major smuggling operation, say engineers have brought in earth moving-equipment and are placing deep steel tubes at short intervals into the ground.

The government has not confirmed the claims but one security source said the plan was to build a blast-proof, impenetrable steel wall of adjoining two inch thick sheets across stretches of the frontier known to be used by smugglers.

Another official said engineers were installing tunnel detection equipment along the border, which is about seven miles long. He refused to confirm that a wall was also being planned.

Egypt to host Obama outreach to Muslims

As the first Arab and Muslim country to recognize Israel three decades ago, Egypt is mainly considered as Israel's right hand man against the Palestinians.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Which is weird when you consider that Israel tried to frame Egypt twice with the Lavon Affair and the attack on the USS Liberty.

SIXTY MEMBER AID DELEGATION ALLOWED ENTRY TO GAZA (VIA EGYPT)

The delegation, which includes Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker, organized by the peace group CODEPINK, was allowed through the Rafah, Egypt crossing in time for International Women’s Day, March 8. The crossing has been closed by the Egyptian government almost continuously since July 2007. However, Egyptian First Lady Suzanne Mubarak, chairman of the Egyptian Red Crescent (similar to the Red Cross) and president of the National Women´s Committee, communicated her “blessing” of the mission through the Red Crescent team that escorted the delegation through the crossing.

US backs deal to reopen Gaza-Egypt border

Key ceasefire demands of Hamas and Israel would be met under plan to stop crossings being used for weapons smuggling.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US and Israel justify the bombings along the Gaza/Egypt border by claiming that HAMAS is smuggling Iranian-supplied weapons through the tunnels, but has anyone actually SEEN these weapons?

Has HAMAS used an anti-tank weapons against Israel? Have any Israeli planes been shot down by shoulder fired surface to air missiles?

Have we seen anything other than those home made hammered-from-old-food-can hobby rockets launched at Israel?

Israel justified the starvation of the entire Gaza people (collective punishment) by claiming HAMAS was being armed by Iran.

After three weeks of unrelenting slaughter of civilians, where are these claimed Iranian weapons?

Why Arab dictators will not help GAZA

The Sources of Arabs’ Shame: Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia
by Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar / January 10th, 2009

"The Arab Collaborators
The often asked question, when it comes to the Palestinians, is about the role of Arab countries in the Palestinian struggle for freedom. The people not familiar with the political landscape of the area often see the Middle East as two camps, Arab countries on one side and Israel on the other. The reality is totally different. Israel has seldom been alone. Beside its usual American, French, British and other staunch allies, she has had the hidden backing of several Arab countries."

Egypt court says aid must be allowed into Gaza

Despite an Israeli economic blockade in place to limit traffic to and from the Gaza Strip, an Egyptian court has ruled that Cairo must allow humanitarian aid and supplies to enter Gaza via the Rafah Border Crossing. The Rafah Border Crossing is the small Mediterranean stip of land's only border to the outside world.

Presently, Egypt has limited humanitarian trucks from entering Gaza as part of its border crackdown in line with Israeli policies.

The court said the action was in violation of Egyptian law and contradicted official government policy.
