Americans are worse than broke, they are discouraged. The bailout sent a clear message that no matter how hard you work, the government can plunge you into deeper debt with the stroke of the pen or the vote of a congress inextricably linked with Wall Street itself. Black Tuesday may have plunged the United States into the Great Depression but it was a sense of hopelessness; the feeling that nothing one could personally do would improve things that kept us in that depression until WW2. The American Dream is a nightmare. Worse, for most Americans it turned out to be a cruel lie.

US generals planning for resource wars

Under the auspices of the US department of defence and department of the army, the US military have just published a document entitled 2008 Army Modernization Strategy which makes for interesting reading against the current backdrop of deteriorating international fiscal, environmental, energy resource and security crises.

Understanding the Crisis

What caused this? It is a simple question, and yet answers are all over the map, as you might expect. Here's mine in two words: fiat money. The word fiat means: out of nothing. Money out of nothing is money that is eventually worth nothing. The possibility of precisely that happening emerged on August 15, 1971. Since Nixon severed the last tie of the dollar to gold, the world's monetary system has not been restrained by anything physical. We've depended on the discretion of central bankers. We can't trust that, and this crisis shows precisely why.

Russian warships in Syrian waters

Ten Russian warships have been deployed at the Syrian port of Tartus based on an accord reached by the two sides after the August south Caucases conflict.

Rear Admiral Andrei Baranov, head of the Russian Black Sea Fleet's operations directorate, said Friday the Russian engineering crew was at Tartus to expand the capacity of the harbor to host additional fleet vessels.

The teams will also be working on expanding Latakia, another Syrian port, possibly for aircraft carriers or guided missile cruisers, said Baranov.

The End Of The United States

US Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson, in collusion with the US Congress, is about to commit an act of blatant treason.

Instead of doing the right thing, which would have been to place the system in administration (bankruptcy reorganisation), he has decided to make the United States itself bankrupt.

What Paulson has announced is this: he will establish a Federal agency to buy up what will amount to trillions of dollars of bad debt. The debt will become the liability of the US taxpayer.

CIA Chief Speaks of Trying to Provoke Terrorists as Latest Drone Strike Kills Seven in South Waziristan

Admiral Michael Mullen made a surprise visit to Pakistan yesterday. and according to the US Embassy he “reiterated the US commitment to respect Pakistan’s sovereignty“. Just hours later, US drones fired four missiles into South Waziristan, killing at least seven and injuring three others.

Webmaster's Commentary:

You have GOT to be flipping kidding me: Hayden is quoted as saying the CIA is trying to "..."tickle" enemy groups to provoke a reaction, often with missile strikes targeting just an individual.
""We use military operations to excite the enemy, prompting him to respond. In that response we learn so much," said Hayden, a retired Air Force general who has led the CIA since 2006."

That Hayden could even use the word "tickle" to describe the death and injuries to non-combatants hit in CIA-orchestrated strikes is sickening. Maybe, he thinks they die laughing?!?

And what do we "learn", Michael Hayden, from the responses of these militants, when they are left alive? I can tell you, sir, and I don't have to be a military analyst to understand this.

They grieve at the loss of their mothers, their sisters, brothers, their children, and their friends you have murdered. And you have radicalized them even further against both the US and the current Pakistani government.

And by the way: you and Admiral Mullen need to have a conversation (if in fact he is still speaking to you) about the fact that ordering a strike against militants in a country, when you know he's in a country assuring its leadership we will respect its territorial integrity, destroys any last microscopic shred of US integrity accredited to it by the rest of the world.

Official: U.S. considering new steps against Russia

The United States is considering to take further actions against Russia after the latter's invasion of Georgia, Under Secretary of State William Burns said here Wednesday.

"We continue to review other options," Burns told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "It is important to reinforce for Russia the consequences of its actions in Georgia as a means of ensuring compliance with its commitments to President (Nicolas) Sarkozy."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Undersecretary Burns: you appear to have rather conveniently left out one of the most important aspects of Russia's actions: the fact that Georgia invaded South Ossetia to re-assert control of the primarily ethnically Russian and Russian-speaking area.

And sir, with the American economy well and truly flushed, as the events on wall street and around the world have demonstrated this last week (coupled with an estimated 410 billion dollar Federal deficit), and desperate, out of work Americans in bread-lines around the country, where is the money going to come from to do anything regarding Russia?

We'd darned well better take care of our US citizens FIRST, and clean up our own mess first, before we start thinking about retaliation against anyone.

Editorial: Troubling developments in India-Pak relations

India’s defence minister, Mr AK Antony, has accused Pakistan of backing the terrorists who have recently bombed the cities of India. Pakistan has already accused India of funding terrorists and insurgents in Balochistan and FATA. India has just started making noises about Pakistan fishing again in the troubled waters of Kashmir. Pakistan accuses India, similarly, of turning off the Chenab waters that belong to Pakistan under a treaty arrangement.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Neither the Indians nor the Pakistanis gain any benefit from increased tensions.

Particularly for the Pakistanis, this is a distraction from the very real and pressing internal problems they are facing, including their economy, unrest, and massive governmental corruption.

However, the timing of this is a distraction may may well be a not too subtle message from the US and NATO: tolerate the border attacks we are doing inside Pakistan's sovereign territory, and make the appropriate outraged noises to your people, or things may get very much worse.

Obama calls for US military mobilization

In remarks that clearly pointed toward the restoration of the military draft under an Obama administration, the Democratic candidate said Thursday night that his job as president would include demanding that the American people recognize an "obligation" for military service. "If we are going into war, then all of us go, not just some," Senator Barack Obama declared.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The plans for a restoration of the draft (now called by its kinder, gentler name, "national service") have been quietly been put in place in congress for some time now.

There are a number of bills which have been "sleeping" in congressional committees, and will come for a vote when congress thinks it can get the American people to buy into it.

And this time, these bills will not only be coming for your sons; they will be coming for your daughters also.

Some of these bills are written in such a way that young people cannot get into college until they can prove that they have fulfilled their national service obligations.

A computer game in which players control a Nazi soldier on a mission to “wipe out the Jewish race” has been condemned as tasteless and offensive by British Jewish groups.

The game called Jewish Massacre, which is available as a free download over the internet, allows players to take control of an “German Hero” whose goal is to “ensure that no Jewish man or woman is left alive.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yes, I made a slight change to the copy. I did it to point out that the offensiveness should be the same regardless of the particular races involved. We should not react with horror at racism directed against one group, then shrug our shoulders when the same offense is committed against others.

Next US terror attack 'could be by white Americans or Europeans'

US intelligence officials increasingly fear that the next terror attack on the United States will be carried out by white Americans or Europeans.

As Barack Obama and John McCain head to New York's Ground Zero seven years after 19 Middle-Eastern hijackers brought devastation to the US mainland, counter-terrorism experts believe that any future attack will be made by terrorists with an "American face".

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is simply a justification for more surveillance of Americans and Europeans, and those people who are not, at this time, in one of their data bases.

Slowly I Turned and Step by Step, Inch by Inch, America Falls.

Many people are wondering how it is that the McCain/Palin ticket could be neck and neck with the Obama ticket after eight years of bitter misery and lies at the hands of the worst administration that America has ever known; an administration that wasn’t even legally elected either time. It becomes more absurd when you see that this new ticket agrees the majority of the time with what the former administration did. The former administration is guilty of high crimes and treason. There is more evidence than any court would need to confer the death penalty on these miscreants.

We must evolve or we will die.

“While the American media is entertaining the American public with the on-going political three ringer, very serious storms are building, and have been building, in the Middle East. Triangulating an Asian conflict

Even as the media feverishly debates the paternity of the Republican vice-presidential candidate's granddaughter and the difficulties associated with sitting through an Obama speech without either dancing or dozing off, these important Asian stories are being relegated to the back pages. The first of these stories gets some coverage, but perhaps without any comprehensive analysis of its longer-term ramifications; the second and third are virtually missing from all media.

US plays both sides in the Philippines

But what interests have the USIP, the US military, and the other US government agencies been advancing? Analysts have advanced two possibilities. The US is now supporting moves toward the creation of a more autonomous - or even an independent - pro-US Bangsamoro state as a hedge against a more pro-China Philippines. Or the United States has only been manipulating the peace talks to deliberately foment and prolong conflict between Filipinos and Moros in order to justify its sustained intervention in Mindanao.

Where Have I Seen Sarah Palin Before?

Sarah Palin was much better dressed than the average show mom paraded on Iranian TV more than 20 years ago. The show moms were typically dressed in a black veil. But that’s about the biggest difference. The rhetoric was eerily familiar. When she was finished, I knew I had seen her before. Only that it wasn’t her. It was her ideological predecessors at a different time in a different country.

Politicians and pundits use the phrase “Cost of Freedom” a lot, usually in reference to something they are asking you to do that you probably prefer not to, such as pay higher taxes, wear a uniform, submit to intrusive surveillance, or simply keep quiet about any doubts you may have about the former.

Before going into the cost of freedom, however, perhaps we need to take a closer look at what we mean by freedom, exactly.

Army: Soldier suicide rate may set record again

Soldier suicides this year could surpass the record rate of last year, Army officials said Thursday, urging military leaders at all levels to redouble prevention efforts for a force strained by two wars.

"Army leaders are fully aware that repeated deployments have led to increased distress and anxiety for both soldiers and their families," Army Secretary Pete Geren said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

War is basically an extension of foreign policy through organized violence: it possible that some of those who committed suicide no longer saw themselves as the champions of democracy, but as instruments of a geopolitical agenda only attainable at the point of a gun?

Evangelical faith drives Palin's pro-Israel view

"Historically, the Assemblies of God have been dispensationalists, which means they believe in 'the rapture' of Christians that takes them out of the world," said Mr. Matthews. "Central to that position is a very strong support for Israel. It's integral to their view of both prophecy and politics. Denying Israel is almost like denying the faith."

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is perhaps political pragmatism driving Palin's support of Israel, rather than her faith alone.

She is keenly aware of the kinds of monetary and PR resources can flow to a campaign when the politicians vow their fealty for Israel.

In Wasilla, Pregnancy Was No Secret
By Nathan Thornburgh/WASILLA

So his name is Levi.

That's about the only thing that I didn't know about Bristol Palin's pregnancy. The rest of the details I picked up almost without trying, while talking about other things with townsfolk — some who know the governor and her family well, some who don't. It was, more or less, an open secret. And everyone was saying the same thing: the governor's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, the father is her boyfriend, and it's really nobody's business beyond that.

I happen to agree.

Instead of an airplane, it's a floodwall, and instead of a Band-Aid, the witness says two years ago, he saw the contractor filling the expansion joint or opening between the floodwalls with newspaper.

U.S. boy in Afghan custody likely terror suspect's son

An 11-year-old boy detained with a Pakistani woman accused of trying to kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan is believed to be her son, U.S. prosecutors said in a court letter obtained on Tuesday.

U.S.-trained neuroscientist and al Qaeda suspect Aafia Siddiqui, 36, was arrested in Afghanistan in mid-July and flown to New York earlier this month to be charged with attempting to kill and assault U.S. soldiers.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The details of what this woman was supposed to have done are still very unclear.

Notice that in the second paragraph she is charged with "attempting to kill and assault US soldiers", emphasis on attempting.

One thing is clear. Apparently, the days of Abu Ghraib are over, where parents were forced to watch the torture and humiliation of their children to get them to say what their interrogators wanted to hear are over; now, the US simply imprisons kids as "leverage" to get their parents to say whatever the interrogators want them to hear.

Of Moose and Pit Bulls

The illusion of omnipotence dies hard. The American military has been dominant for so long that neither it nor Americans can grasp that there are limits to its power. America now tries militarily to encircle Russia, Iran, and China, which increasingly looks like an aging pit bull trying to encircle a herd of moose. The Pentagon is planning for a war with China and talks of “Full Spectrum Dominance.” The current government in Washington wants to attack Iran and Pakistan, threatens Syria and Venezuela, and seems bent on igniting another Cold War with Russia (if one ignites cold wars).

Watching the convention is like seeing a bad divorce

The Democratic National Convention that begins today in Denver looks to me less like the coronation of Barack Obama than a soap opera wedding. The kind everyone tunes in to for the fireworks.

Will Hillary use a planned reception of her delegates Wednesday to release them all to Obama, as news organizations have reported, before the roll call?

Or will she make the poor man sit there for an interminable count of her 1,600 faithful, holding his breath lest one of them throw a wingding on the floor of the convention?

Webmaster's Commentary:

After having watched Bill and Hill for a number of years, there's a bet I might possibly place: that she will "not go gentle into that good night" of meekly handing the nomination clearly to Obama at the convention.

If in fact she does wrest the nomination from Obama in a floor fight, she will destroy the Democratic party in the process, and hand the election to McCain.

Kashmir on brink as India scrambles for solution

A lack of political leadership threatens to allow seething Hindu-Muslim tensions and separatist anger in revolt-hit Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) to spiral out of control, analysts say. Kashmir, which is witnessing its biggest anti-India demonstrations in years, is “poised at a very delicate stage”, said security analyst Uday Bhaskar.

Webmaster's Commentary:

India completely mis-judged the potential for Muslim response to their donating land for a Hindu Shrine in Kashmir.

The anger at India's control of Kashmir has been simmering for a long time, and unfortunately, this was the spark which moved that anger into seething rage.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office reports that at least a dozen undocumented immigrants have been detained after wandering near a US Air Force Base in southwestern Arizona Sunday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There are two questions which need to be asked here.

The first is, where, precisely, are these "undocumented immigrants" supposed to have come from?

There appears to be an assumption this station would like people to infer from the relative closeness of the base to the Mexican border, but the article never states a country of origin.

This is either sloppy reporting, or a deliberate fudging of the facts.

And second, how in the blazes did they get that close to this kind of military asset without having been discovered and stopped on their way far sooner?

Webmaster's Commentary:

Another Famous Victory for Condi

The GBIs of our GMD system employ heat-seeking Kinetic Kill Vehicles. With such a system there is literally no margin for error. We either hit the Russian/Chinese pointy-shaped nuke-carrying re-entry vehicles – which are stone cold when exo-atmospheric – with our heat-seeking bullets or we don’t.

And, of this writing, we have never even tried to hit an exo-atmospheric stone-cold RV with our heat-seeking bullet. We’re having enough trouble hitting artificially hot-hot-hot targets.
