NEW YORK -
Authorities discovered a suspicious package containing an unknown
powdery substance Friday at LaGuardia Airport and partially
evacuated the main terminal, police said.
A New York Fire Department spokesman said 10 people were
apparently sickened by the unknown substance and were being treated
at the scene. But officials with the Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey, which operates the city's airports, would not confirm
reports of any injuries.
A Port Authority police spokesman said the substance was
discovered about 1 p.m. during the search of a handbag at an
American Airlines section of the terminal.
Results of an on-site test were inconclusive, and a hazardous
materials team was called to the scene to investigate, police said.
The terminal was partially evacuated, officials said.
